Using a Re-Direct Domain Name for my Blog

    Hello-

I was wondering if someone could tell me if using a re-directed Domain name was advisable or not. I had heard from a marketing Guru that we should never use a re-direct URL, but not sure why. I’d rather not have “wordpress.com” at the end of my Blog. Can someone please give me some advise on this?

Trust me. Get the domain name upgrade. This is a VERY good idea. If you stick with the whatever.wordpress.com and then in two years want to move to a different host, you LOSE all the links to that blog. You can’t take them with you. You lose your Technorati standing, you loose your Google juice, you lose the name, too!

If you get the domain upgrade early on and have a different, unique name like cnicholas.com then when you do move you keep all the links that were already to cnicholas.com even when it moves off WordPress.com. And you keep the pagerank, the google juice, everything.

My advice is to make the switch early in the blog’s life. I got my domain name eight months into the blog, and if it had been available I’d have gotten it earlier. The earlier you do it, the more links to your new name there will be, and the fewer you’ll have to fix by hand when you move.
