Using Ads on WordPress

Though wordpress doesn’t allow putting ads on the blogs, there are people who are making money with articles on using AdSense on wordpress.

    Any clues?

I’m not sure what you mean. They’re not WordPress.com sites that you have provided the links to, so they’re perfectly entitled to post about anything they like. If you see a WP.com site with sponsored ads, etc, they should be reported for breaking the Terms of Service.

The marketing advice on those sites refers to blogs running the self-hosted WordPress.org software. If you self-host, you can include adsense and plugins, etc, on your blog, things which you can’t use here. It allows for more flexibility than blogs at WP.com, but has its disadvantages too. You might want to check it out if you’re thinking about it. :) http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/wordpresscom-vs-wordpressorg/

    AdSense and other ads

    Puttin’ ads on WP.com is a violation, WP.org isn’t.

Thanks so much for that clearly irrelevant information. It means the world to us. Really, it does. I can’t imagine why nobody told us about this before. I look at the world with new eyes now.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yikes, I forgot about that. I need to edit my imported posts. I just moved from a wp.org self-hosted, to wp.com. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Hm, actually it seems they’ve been automatically removed from the couple of posts I’ve looked at. Can anyone confirm if that’s the case so I know the rest of the posts (which would take me forever to find, but I will if needed) have the ads removed automatically?

I was using Google Ads, which has been removed from the two posts.

Yes, those will be automatically stripped out. Or rather, overridden. WordPress.com itself is running adsense on our blogs, and their install of Adsense overrides any that you might attempt, so I don’t think you need to go through and delete them. Affiliate links, though, have to be ripped out by hand.

The only other things I used was the occasional Amazon text link to buy a product I wrote a review of and they’re OK according to the FAQ?

  • Unknown's avatar

No. NO. Not if they are affiliate links. If you get anything when people click through and buy, they’ve got to go. You can link to the book on Amazon, just not in a way that brings you any benefits.

Last time I checked you were only allowed one affiliate text link, but nobody really knows. It’s mostly dependent on what sort of mood staff are in.

    AdSense and other ads

    Adsense and other Ads

Adsense, Yahoo, Chitika and other ads are not permitted to be added by users. Adverts that may be inserted when using an external blogging program will be blocked.

Sponsored / paid posts including PayPerPost and ReviewMe are not permitted.

Sponsored / paid links are not permitted.

    Text ads are not permitted.

A discreet link to your business in the sidebar or an About page is permitted.

One discreet link to Amazon per blog is okay, but if the primary purpose of the blog is to drive traffic to affiliate programs that’s not allowed. If you’re not sure, contact support.

Clicktrackers and any promotion of the “I made a million on the internet and so can you” type of advertising are expressly forbidden.

We have a very low tolerance for blogs created purely for search engine optimization or commercial purposes, machine-generated blogs, and will continue to nuke them, so if that’s what you’re interested in WordPress.com is not for you.
