Using an existing domain name

I currently have a website outside of wordpress and I’d like to bring the domain name over and manage my site with wordpress. Is there a way to do that easily? If not easily, then is there a way to do it? I’m imagining that I may need to get rid of my old website entirely so that the domain becomes available before adding the wordpress site. If this is the case, is it possible to establish my new site with a new domain name and then get rid of the old one and change the name of the wordpress site after that’s complete?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually and a domain name purchase and domain mapping are included in the Premium ujpgrade bundle.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the WordPress.COM blog, and as you own a domain URL already, you can see here for mapping an existing domain. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

It can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

I also have an existing website that I want to bring over to WP.com. I will make a completely new website in WP, but keep my existing domain name (I understand about mapping). I will not be transferring/importing any of the existing content. The WP site will have new content, but same domain name.
My question is: Can the existing website remain live while I create the WP.com site. i.e., when I register for a blog/website in WP, do I have to map then, making the existing website go dead? Can I create the WP site before I map and it goes live?
    The existing website is http://www.rocklogic.com/index.php
(I do not need help with lindacovella.com)
    Thank you!
