Using blog for Education

Hello — I have been using specialtopics.wordpress.com for many years in my high school computer science classroom. I have an independent-study class called Special Topics in Computer Science where students use our WordPress site to post their weekly plans and progress reports. Lately, we’ve been running into a problem where students are telling me that they can no longer upload images with their posts (getting the ‘This file exceeds the maximum upload size for this site.’ error). After investigating this, it seems that our storage space for media is completely full. Is there another way for students to add images to their posts without them being stored in the Media section? Is buying a higher-tiered plan the only way to rectify this? If so, are there educational discounts available to teachers who use the site only for their classrooms? I appreciate your help in letting me know what my options are — thanks!

  • Hi there,

Firstly props on how you are using your site! I can see you have had this one going for 16 years now! We do not offer educational discounts at this time, so the only way to add media upload space to an existing site (like specialtopics.wordpress.com) would be to upgrade it to one of our plans. The Personal plan (for example) would expand the upload space to 6GB, the Premium plan upload limit is 13GB, and so on.

That said, you could consider a few options without upgrading:

    • I see specialtopics.wordpress.com has media that is quite old, going back as far as 2015. If you are storing media that you no longer need, you could create more space by deleting your oldest media. You are able to bulk delete in the older wp-admin view of the library as explained here: https://wordpress.com/support/media/#wp-admin-media-library. NOTE THAT ANY MEDIA DELETIONS ARE PERMANENT
    • You could also start a new free site (possibly one per class or one per year) since there is no limit to how many sites you can have under your account. You can start a new site at any time here: https://wordpress.com/start/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

I do have one quick follow-up if you don’t mind. Every year I go through and delete all posts from the prior year’s students. When I delete the posts, does that also delete any images they may have uploaded, or does that need to be done manually?

  • Hey there!

Glad to see that was helpful!

Those images would need to deleted as well manually from the media library.

    I hope this helps!
