Using Categories to create contents page
-
Hi
I’m new to WordPress, came here because Blogger wasn’t as user friendly!
I would like to know if there is a way of creating a contents page by using the category as a filter.
On my blog I have Songs and Poems, I would like a page that displays a list of post titles for songs, and one for poetry, but I can’t seem to find a way of doing it.
Using the [archives] shortcode generates the sort of list I need, but I cant filter by Category.
Does anyone know if it is possible to achieve this?Apologies if this has been asked before, I tried searching but nothing turned up.
Thanks in advance for any help. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you assign those categories to those posts, then you can use the standard category pages built into wordpress to display only the posts from that category.
Read this post by Panos which will explain things: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/posts-on-pages/ .

There is also the categories widget which you can put into the sidebar on your site.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I am aware of the category pages and do use them, but I would like to display just the post titles, so it appears like a contents page, filtered by category. Surely this must be possible somehow without doing it manually. -
Your only choice then would be to either switch to a theme that does that on category pages, or create the pages and update them manually. Some themes show the full post, some show an excerpt, and some show just the titles.
See the following post by Panos for which themes show just the title on category and archive pages: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/25/full-posts-in-archive-pages/ .
