Using current blog as template for new blog
-
Hi,
I tried reading the boards and saw something close about duplicating a blog for translation purposes, and the answer given didn’t really address the “duplication” but rather the translation. I see that there are issues with google when it comes to “duplication,” as well. However, on these “sub-blogs,” if you will, I’m not having them post to search engines.I’m intending to have a few blogs specific to HOA communities. I created one for my condo complex, Tierra Vista. (tvhealth) I want to create another specific to Smoketree, etc. It pretty much is the same content, (like the weight loss success stories on the side bars) so I’d really like to just create a new blog using the tvhealth as a template and make changes, specific to the other association.
Since I’m not sending to search engines, is this possible? If so, how? I really don’t want to copy/paste all over again!
thank you in advance!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It’s certainly possible, but the answer is indeed copy/paste, at least for all your new material. You can just do a simple Export/Import for the old material.

If the blogs are set to “private” which blocks search engines from indexing theme there is no problem with duplicate content. The problem arises when people take the same content and place it in multiple blogs with the intent of gaming search engine results and gaining traffic. http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66359
Prime examples of this are found in the weight loss blogs. Many bloggers have multiple blogs in all the crevices of that niche. The user experience of typing different but related terms into search engines is to discover blog after blog full of the same content under every possible category and tag in the SERPs (search engine results pages). Examining of those blogs revealed blocks of identical text . The motivation for having multiple blogs with duplicated content was to dominate the niche, direct the flow of traffic in it to specific blogs, and make money off the advertising. Ironically many were free hosted blogspot blogs from Google’s Blogger.

thanks guys! I have my one main website that is reported/picked up by the search engines. I’m not duplicating that one at all (skinnytogo.wordpress.com)
*Question re: timethief’s comment- when we add “tags” onto each post, can we reuse the same “tags” for search purposes? Mine will be the same tags continually, as that’s my content. “health, weight loss, lose weight” etc. Is that an issue?the subblog created (tvhealth.wordpress.com) is completely different from my main blog and the box for search engines was not “checked” when creating the blog. This is the one I intend to “duplicate” somewhat.
On the subblogs, I’m simply intending to create a blog per association within my community, as there will be things specific to those communities…like events/tastings, etc. that will differ from the others. However, I want to ensure the main program content is the same to be consistent, like success stories, and what the program is, etc.
So, the answer to “duplication” is No, because of the issues with people “manipulating” the system? (great, oh well!)
As raincoaster mentioned above: I’m not familiar with the importing/exporting features. Will that help in this instance or is it basically the same time to simply cut/paste?
Again, thanks for the help!

This is the support documentation link for importing content from another blogging platform http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/ If the platform your old content is on is not listed there then I believe copy and paste is the only means you will have.
