Using current domain without interrupting existing site?

    Hello,

I am new to this. I am trying to figure out how to build a wordpress site and blog on my own that will eventually be at my current website’s domain name. I have a website that is not wordpress right now that will be functioning as my site until this one is ready to be published. Is there a way to build the site on wordpress and then move it to my current domain name?

    Thank you!

    Susan

WordPress.com and WordPress.ORG operate on different software so the short answer to your question it “no”. All themes here at WordPress.COM are coded to run on our software and are not transferable.

I separated these comments because I want to point out that though the theme cannot be transferred to a WordPress.ORG install from a free hosted WordPress.COM blog the contents can be exported out and imported in. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/

If you do a WordPress.ORG install you can install it in a sub-directory and get it set up the way you want then “move” it to the root and run your entire site. I used to have a WordPress.ORG install and that is what I did.

For the how to do the above you should make friends over at WordPress.ORG, what you want to do is a very common way to do a web site.

Depending on what type of web site you now have the other option is to set a blog up here then use domain mapping to use your existing domain name to your blog on WordPress.COM. HOWEVER, there are Terms of Service issues that you should look at closely before deciding on moving here.
