Using Custom template for Menu Category Page

  Hello, I have been searching everywhere to find a way to list posts from a certain category on a page. After making custom page templates and looking trying various things I finally found out how to here http://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

  Now the problem is the page does not look right unless I am using the custom template I have made. Is there a way for assign the page template to the category page?

  Also the permalink comes up as category 1 can I change that too?

  So I want a list of posts for the category of photography http://www.adventeurs.com/photography

  but this is what the category page looks like
  http://www.adventeurs.com/category/1/
