using excerpt feature after I've published

I realized my company’s blog page was getting lengthy so attempted to excerpt after publishing several posts. I use the Capoverso theme. I was able to excerpt and publish but only see it when I’m logged in on my backend. Not on the actual blog post page. I’ve tried closing and re-opening browser, etc. I’m obviously a novice at this but am I missing something? I’m ultimately looking to shorten this page so folks can see the range of posts [https://athoughtfulmove.wordpress.com/blog/] since a Table of Contents-type list I don’t believe is possible on the right under Blog Posts. thanks for any assistance. ~Kate

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Is your goal to display an excerpt of each post on the blog page? You can add the More tag to each post to accomplish that:

Looks like you already added a More tag on the post titled “Giving Freely — donate your home goods to do good” and it’s working as it should. On your blog page, I see an excerpt for that post, followed by a “Continue reading” link:

Giving Freely donate your home goods to do good athoughtfulmove Musings on easing your mind and your move

If you need further help with this, just let me know!

  • As for a table of contents, you could use the Display Posts shortcode to display a list of your posts on a static page:

thank you @kathrynwp . I did put the more tag in after posting to the forum in an effort to truncate. what i’m still uncertain of is I published posts then read that I could create a high level summary under More Options/Excerpt. I did that for a few posts, updated, and while the excerpt shows on my log in screen it does not show on the public blog. Is this feature not intended to be public?

Essentially what I’m trying to do is just have a teaser so someone can read the entire post if they want, but they can easily see the page’s contents at a glance.

  • I did that for a few posts, updated, and while the excerpt shows on my log in screen it does not show on the public blog.

Could you give me links to the specific posts you’re referring to so I can take a look directly? Or the post titles so I can find them? I’ll be glad to take a look.

thank you! here are the titles of the posts with the excerpt text that I put in the excerpt box. copy/pasted from My Site login page

  • Thanks for those examples, very helpful.

Looks like you’ve uncovered a bug in Capoverso! Those custom excerpts you added should definitely be displaying on the blog page, so I’m going to let our developers know about the glitch so we can get it fixed up.

Thanks for the report! We’ll keep you posted here in this thread.

  • I wanted to let you know that I’ve clarified the expected behaviour of posts and excerpts in your theme. Since Capoverso displays the full post on the blog page by default, if you wanted to display a smaller portion, you would need to use the More tag:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

Since the theme doesn’t display excerpts by default, the custom excerpt will never be displayed – that’s how excerpts work in WordPress and I somehow managed to forget that when replying the first time around, my apologies!

If you prefer not to add a manual More tag to your posts, the other option is to use a theme that displays excerpts by default on the blog page. You’ll find a list of them here:
