Using godaddy and word press…what's required
-
I own a domain and have hosting on go daddy for a non for profit I belong too. I see that go daddy will install word press so that I can run word press. Do I also have to have an account on word press to leverage the functionality on go daddy (currently don’t have one for this non-profit)? Second if I have to have an account on word press is their charge to get these two associated?
Thanks!!!

Hi there. You need to understand there are two versions of WordPress: .com and .org (http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/)
The WordPress hosting they talk about on GoDaddy is the .org version, so you set up your own site from scratch using the WordPress.org software. You have more customisation options, but you are responsible for backups, maintenance, security, etc. You pay GoDaddy for both your domain and hosting (which includes storage space, bandwidth, etc). That WordPress hosting has nothing to do with this site and you’ll need to visit the WordPress.org website for information and help in how to run a website this way. You don’t need a WordPress.com account to have a self-hosted WordPress.org website.
http://wordpress.org/hosting/
http://wordpress.org/support/You can connect a WordPress.org site to the WordPress.com platform so WP.com users can follow, like, share, comment, etc. on your site more easily. For that you’ll need to install the Jetpack plugin on your self-hosted site and you’ll also need a WordPress.com username account (which you already have since you are able to post in this forum). Connecting your site via Jetpack does not cost anything as far as I know.
With WordPress.com (this site) you are hosted by WordPress (i.e. you pay GoDaddy only for the domain, not for hosting). They give you 3GB storage free with unlimited bandwidth, as well as tech support, automatic backups of your site, and site security. You can have a domain registered with GoDaddy which you can connect to your free WordPress.com site using domain mapping (a paid upgrade). You are limited in the type of customisations you can make, the type of code you can use on your site, and you’re bound by the WordPress.com Terms of Service which includes restrictions on advertising.
Let us know if you need more help with this.
