Using Imbalance 2

    OK – thanks!

Do you know how to place the category names above each picture in the front page?

    /Christian

    @panos,
Thanks, I didn’t know that about the sticky post…

    Hi!

Can I use the menu space for categories? I am looking for the following function: When clicking on a menu item I would like to show the categories archive related to that menu item.

A picture says more than thousand words, so have a look at this example:

    /Christian

Yes you can – see here:

    Custom menus

  • Unknown's avatar

OK thanks! I will read it ASAP.

I have made some progress and can now click on a menu item and my category archive is displayed. So far so good! :-)

Now I am trying to change the ategory archive picture to have it similar to the one of http://klaraostlund.wordpress.com/

    CATEGORY

    HEADLINE

    PICTURE

    TEXT

    How do you do that?

    /Christian

There’s no “category archive picture”. If you’re referring to the image at the top left, that’s the header image. Uploaded in Appearance > Header.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Justpi, I am getting there…

It is possible to make a “category archive picture”. You can do that by adding a URL through custom links in the meny option. The link should point to the category archive you wish to show.

Menu items can only be text, not images (except if you have the Custom Design upgrade).
If you add a URL through custom links, you’ll get a text link that links to that URL – no image.
To create image links to category pages, you need coding in a text widget. Or you can create them in Links > Add New then add a Links widget.

justpi, many thanks for your tips – much appreciated! :-)

I have seen an Imbalance 2 blog that really appeals to me.The adress is http://klaraostlund.wordpress.com/

It would be perfect to recreate that layout. I have been trying to copy as much as I can, also getting in touch with the owner of the blog – she is in fact Swedish too.So far no luck.

You will find the draft version of my blog on http://ccconsulting.wordpress.com.

Do you have any ideas how she made her blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

If you’re talking about the header of her blog, then
    a) she has hidden the blog title and tagline in Appearance > Header;
    b) column one in the header is a header image, columns two and three are custom menus, column four is a text widget.

If you’re talking about the posts, each thumbnail is a featured image.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Referring to my blog:

    a) OK – I have changed the Appearance > Header to “Christian …etc”
    b) Also OK – but I do not wish to have any header image
    c) Col 2 and 3 are also custom menues in my blog
    d) I also have a few widgets in my col4 – that’s under control

    So far so good.

In my posts I also mark each uploaded picture “featured image”

My remaining problem / question is how she in the posts manage to put the Category (ie Architecture) on top of the Headline (ie TEGELBACKEN) which in turn is on top of the picture, In my draft I always have the Category BELOW the pictures.(Click on “Hem” in http://ccconsulting.wordpress.com/blog/

    /Christian

Oh I see. Sorry, I made a mistake in my previous reply, because I didn’t notice this detail. A featured image will show up above the post category and post title. For an image below them you don’t use a featured post: you insert the image in the post, switch the editor to HTML, copy or cut the image code and paste it into the Excerpt module of the editor.
If you’re not seeing the Excerpt module while on the post editor screen, click Screen Options (top right) to activate it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Oops, “featured post” was supposed to be “featured image“.

  • Unknown's avatar

Aha…we are getting closer… :-) Many thanks for your help!

1, Do I need CSS to do this?

    2. Do I insert a URL pointing to a picture in the excert field?

    3. Perhaps you have an example of what the code should look like?

  • Unknown's avatar

justpi, I have managed to get exceerpts running, however text only so far…also found this info:

I guess that is not about standard WordPress though.

  • Unknown's avatar

If by “CSS” you mean the Custom Design upgrade, no.
You don’t insert an image URL, you insert an image code.
If I take the image in your post “Nyföretagarcentrum” as an example, the code you need to put in the Excerpt field is this:
    <img class="size-full" src="http://ccconsulting.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/manschettknapp1.jpg" />

  • Unknown's avatar

justpi, I have great news! :-)

Now I have an example that works exaktly the way I wanted. Category, headline of the post, pictures in the post and an excerpt with a reference to the pictire showing on the front page.

Many thanks – I owe you – beer, whisky, congac, what ever you prefer! :-)

    Christian

  • Unknown's avatar

You’re welcome (and make that cognac or tequila please)!

Now, to refine the excerpt and make it better than the site you wanted to imitate, you can turn the paragraph you’ve added in the Excerpt field to this:
    <p style="margin-top:6px;">TEXT HERE</p>

This will create some space between the thumbnail and the text; change the number to adjust the space.

  • Unknown's avatar

    The extra space looks great.

I guess I owe you a bottle of each by now!

    Thanks!
