Using ‘More’ tag to link to an external site
-
I’d like to use the <!–more–> tag to link to another site so only an extract appears in my blog with a bit at the end prompting users to view entire story at anotherwebsite.com. I’d also like to customise the More tag to include my own text to something along the lines of ‘for the full story click here’. Does anybody have any suggestions the best way to achieve this? Any advice appreciated.

the more tag only links to the permalink of your post. if you want to link to the other site, just use a nomal link tag and type it as ‘read more’. =)

It’s important to note that section 2, 5th bullet of the ToS (terms of service) here stipulates that wordpress.com blogs cannot be used to drive traffic to 3rd party sites. Ignoring this, doing so and being apprehended can result in having your blog deleted. This, in essence, is what you are proposing when you ask for instructions for using a more tag to link to an external site http://wordpress.com/tos/ -
Thanks for the replies. Just so no-one thinks I’m a spammer, I am actually a freelance journalist writing advice columns on technology, and have no wish to either spam or promote a third party site. Some of my pieces have been published elsewhere on the web, though, and I was simply worried about copyright so thought by providing an shortened summary along with a link to the originally published work everyone would be happy!

You can easily do that, just not using the More tag. Simply put in a link and indicate that it’s a link to a different site. People often react negatively when they’re directed off one site with no warning.

That’s great, thanks guys. I’m new to this and have found the forum invaluable so thanks for all your time – it’s really appreciated. I’ve been really impressed by the quality of the site and support in general, so thanks again!
