Using multi-columns of text
-
Hi Jeremey,
I don’t know if you changed anything but the instructions like body etc were not there when I went on to the post. I am happy with it now. Thanks for all the help!.
It was only over the weekend that I realised that I didn’t need to mention the code wrapping instructions that are used in the visual editor-as the html (of people doing multiple column poems) would be going into the text editor and were not needed for that.
Regards
Ashby
PS Can I mention this post to others as a lot of people have been trying to do multiple columns on WordPress? -

Hi Ashby,
When I preview your post titled “How to do up to six columns of text in WordPress”, the source code is appearing as intended on my side. Here’s what I’m seeing:
Your visitors can copy and paste this HTML code as shown here:
They will just need to make sure they select just the code, not the line reference numbers.
Even if you can think of a way for me to do this with none of the extra html instructions like Body etc I would still need to tell people they have to add your wrapping in code instructions won’t I ? Because they will be invisible. But that can easily be done as a separate instruction.
If you would like contributors to add their poems in columns, you will need to use HTML formatting. I would just tell them to copy the HTML, paste it into the Text Editor, and replace the default column text with their poem. Would that work?

Hi Jeremey,
Thank for all the help. I wasn’t going to post to the forum again. I have posted my web address to two poetry sites that discussed multi-columns.
Many thanks

Hi Jeremey, I don’t know if you would prefer I start a new thread?
I cannot post anything using Microsoft Expression Web 4. I tried using their Forum but was blocked some how. Can I enclose what I was going to post there? Can you help or should I start a new post?
enc:
Hi All,
I write multi-voice poetry. This involves up to six columns of text (a column for each speaker). A WordPress expert has just helped me to write the html for up to six columns. I simply cut and pasted the two columns below to make up to six columns. I am a beginner at html. My website is: https://multivoicepoetry.wordpress.com/multi-voice-poetry-beginnings/
I enjoy writing the text into my Web 4 and looking at the Design view. However, code that works in Design view and in preview browser does not work when put into the Text Post area of my site. Part of the problem is I think (?) I need small text and WordPress defaults to larger text. Trying to use xx small text with CSS in Web 4 does not work (CSS code instructions show before the poem). I don’t know if the fault is a conflict in code or just that WordPress won’t allow very small text. I have not yet managed any multi-voice poem yet while using Web 4. It looks brilliant as well. And having the split view is great! I would like to be able to use it properly.

We are happy to help you here if we can. Can you tell me more about how you are using Microsoft Expression Web 4? How is it connected to your WordPress.com site?

Dear Liz the Fair,
I am just a beginner at html. I have just started two poetry sites. One uses multi-voice which has up to six columns of text in it. Jerome helped me set up a template that I could use to make two to six columns of multi-voice text-I just insert my poem into the coding.
I had been using Microsoft word to make up my poems and everyone said to use something else. I discovered that my work (a School) uses Microsoft Expression Web 4 . So I use that to make up my poems. I check for continuity errors on Web 4. The only errors that come up is a </DIV> tag which I seem to need for WordPress. When I check my poem on the Design view of Web 4 it looks ok. I also check in Preview browser. Sometimes there is extra code at the end but usually ok.
I have also used CSS on other poems to make the text stay small. So I have written poems with small text, and some with text made small by CSS. I have left both versions from two different poems in my Drafts on my multi-voice site (Dignity and Examining the evidence).
When I put the poems into Post and the Text area (as they are html) the one without CSS seems to default to a larger size of font. This causes it to overflow the lines it is in and spreads down the page. The poem that I put in from Web 4 using CSS to have xx small text fits ok and stays at the correct size. However, the CSS instructions are displayed also-at the top of the post. I have not been able to use Web 4 to post anything. I keep getting these same problems. Can you please look at my two poems in drafts and see if I can do anything to get them to go onto the site properly?
Dignity uses small text but defaults to a far to large text when posted. I cut the poem from the Web 4 page and paste it into WordPress Text area.
Examining the evidence stays small but also has its CSS instructions showing at the top of the page.
Regards

Hi Liz the Fair,
I should add that as I work in a School every internet connection is filtered by the server. So, on WordPress I have to use the Classic browser. I don’t know if that affects anything. I have been looking through a few books on WordPress and on websites and cannot find the kind of fault I have. I have the booklet WordPress the complete guide but it is 2014 and does not give much detail on doing columns or html.
Would it be better if I had a theme that was more suited to html? I notice that the Complete Guide says there are free themes that are more responsive. I picked the one I did solely because it is wide and might be able to fit six columns of text. But then again I do not know if the width of the theme does allow more columns?
Simple Corp Theme by http://www.s5themes.com/theme/simplecorp/ is said to be html friendly. But again as it is not on the WordPress list of themes I may be blocked from downloading it from SimpleCorp.
I use the Web 4 package in the morning before work.
Many thanks for your help

Thanks for including the examples, that really helped. The problem is the CSS Microsoft Expression Web 4 is providing works differently than the editor is expecting. The easiest way to fix this is to convert the CSS provided by Microsoft Expression Web 4 into in-line styling, which the editor can read. For example, the goal of this code
.auto-style1 { font-size: xx-small; }is to make the font smaller for all the text in the post, right? If so, adding another div that includes everything you want small will achieve your goal. This is the code you’d use at the top of the page
<div style="font-size: xx-small;">Then at the very bottom of the post you’d close the div like this
</div>What ever instructions Microsoft Expression Web 4 provides in the part of the css where it says “font-size: xx-small;” can be put in the div like I showed you in the example.
Give that a try and let me know if you have questions!

Hi Liz,
Thanks for all that.
I will try it out today.
Cheers

Hi Liz the Fair,
It works perfect until half way down the page when the left column goes to double spacing (don’t know why) and takes up twice as long on the column. I left it in drafts if you could please have a look…
Many thanks

In this post the spacing problem is unrelated
https://multivoicepoetry.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=162&action=edit
If you go into the text view, you’ll see there are just extra line breaks. Please remove those and see if the issue persists.
It’s harder for me to see what you are going for in the other post, but the problem could be the same one.

Hi Liz the Fair,
The text is all ok in web 4 and in text view on WordPress. I have checked and rechecked. However, half way down the first column it goes (against my wishes) to double spacing and it is that that sets the text all wrong. I have no extra line breaks.

Which post is this happening on? Please provide a link as well as the exact line where you start to see the problem. Since I don’t know what it’s supposed to look like, it’s hard for me to see exactly what you mean.

Hi Liz the Fair,
I do understand it must be hard for you with such complex column structures. The post is Examining the evidence for war. But basically the two columns should match each other line for line down the page. However, half way down the first column (on preview) the lines become double spaced and make the column about 50% longer than the right hand column. There are no line breaks that are extra. The same thing happens in the other poem (Dignity)-one of the columns goes into double spacing and fails to meet the other columns. I do not intend this to happen. I see nothing in the code that causes it.
It happens at “In an imperfect world” on the column on the left.
Many thanks.
Ashby

There were line breaks in the first column that weren’t in the second one. I’ve removed those. Does it look like you intended now?
