  If I sign up with my current URL, does whatever I produce on WP start showing up there? What I have currently as my webpage is useless but I don’t want to replace with something just as useless. Does WP provide help in building a website other than tools that I don’t have any experience with? Tutorials?

  Nope. You will need to connect your domain in order for the domain to load your new WordPress.com site.

  So, there’s 2 ways to do that. Either with domain mapping or a domain transfer.
