Using my own domain
-
I’m a total WordPress beginner, planning just to blog. I’m uncertain whether to accept the domain name WordPress has assigned me, which is free but cumbersome. Or whether to use my snappy domain name from another registrar. I’m finding it confusing to understand the pricing and the pros and cons. All comments appreciated.

Hi there!
When creating your site we will suggest you available addresses but you do not need to choose any of those, you can type in another address and, if that’s not available, try a similar one. If you’ve already registered the site name and you don’t like it, you can change it, as explained here:
https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address/
You can also map your custom domain, however, for that, you’ll need to purchase one of our paid plans. Since you mentioned you only plan to blog, I’d recommend plan Personal.
You can read more about this plan here:https://wordpress.com/support/plan-features/#word-press-com-personal
Let me know if you have any more questions regarding that.

Hi, I want to map my custom domain, but when I choose the “professional” plan and write which my current domain is, the step where I’m going to pay generates another domain name which includes “.wordpress.com” and a bunch of number, how come? I just want to use my current domain..

@sjoholmsgardweb, you will need the .wordpress.com subdomain to create a site here, although you don’t need to choose the one with random numbers. If you see that, it means that the address you were looking for is not available, try to search for a different one.
You’ll be able to map your custom domain too, and it will hide the free subdomain which will sort of exist in the background.https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
