Using my own domain–who will host the site?

    Hi!

i’ve looked at all the threads on the forum, and i don’t think this question was answered (unless i missed it).

i have a domain that is hosted by Dreamhost, and i want to put my example.wordpress.com blog there.

if i do this, will Dreamhost no longer be hosting the site, and WordPress folks will take over? or will i still also be using Dreamhost, and WordPress will cut out the need for me to deal with FTP stuff?

does someone know the answer to this question?

thanks–i’d like to switch today if i can!!

If you use domain mapping, your blog will be hosted here but look like it is hosted on your domain. You won’t have FTP access here, by the way, and you will be subject to the same terms and conditions as any other wordpress.com site.

By the way – Dreamhost will continue to host your domain, just not your blog.

Yeah, you can get domain mapping ($10) that will allow you to have yourdomain.com be hosted by wordpress.com. Dreamhost will no longer be your host, and you won’t have to dealing with upgrading WordPress or anything like that.

You can find out more here http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/10/domain-mapping/

oh, i was pretty confused about the difference between Dreamhost hosting my domain vs. hosting my blog. i’m very new to all of this.

so thanks for clarifying that part, but i think i still need to understand that part a little better. especially since i’ve already paid Dreamhost, and now I’m going to be paying WordPress.

but it is a very nominal yearly fee, i guess.

what is the fee for? so that WordPress will do the job of FTP stuff? i’m really curious about this.

    thanks!

The fee is for the privilege, I guess.

    Hi acrooms,
you are not allowed to add your own plugins or themes here, so you won’t be given FTP account, but you can store files which you then attach to your post.
The good about blogging with WordPress.Com is that you won’t have to worry about Hosting Bills anymore, you get most likely 99.99 up time here and the site response is really very fast.

Whilst at the other end, you cannot add your own advertisements and so.
