Using my own pictures on a minimal budget

Hi, I am brand new here. I am trying to start a blog about coping with parental dementia in a rural environment. The pictures that wordpress.com has provided, of such things as big city streets or swans swimming in a lake, are totally inappropriate. There is no way I will use them. I have my own pictures I want to use. I uploaded one of my pictures, but it ended up very small, and the inappropriate pictures are still there, much larger than my picture that I want to set as background.

I cannot afford to buy a premium plan now. I have read some tutorials, but found nothing useful. I am so frustrated that I am nearly ready to quit wordpress.com on my first day. Instead I decided to wait until at least tomorrow and see if anyone can offer me some guidance.
    Thanks in advance, Gregory

You aren’t expected to use those images. You are expected to replace the with images of your own and this has nothing to do with upgrading at all.

Here is your detailed theme description page https://wordpress.com/themes/toujours/ with set-up instructions.

The Custom Header image should be at least 1160 wide.

Here is the support doc for a Custom Header Image
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-header-image/

Featured Images should be at least 1160 wide. If you’re using the Featured Content slideshow or displaying the three recent posts, they should be at least 655 tall. Here is the support doc https://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/#setting-a-featured-image

The Site Logo will display up to 600 wide and 200 tall. Here’s the support doc https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-logo/

    Hello
The pictures you are referring to that were “provided” are for demonstration purposes and you can simply delete them, and the posts they are used in. Click Edit, then choose delete for each of the demo posts. As far as uploading your own pictures here is a link to more information:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=images
Be sure to pay attention to the “Recommended Size” as you begin to upload an image, this is an important part of having it look the best within the theme you are using.
Having a premium plan does not mean that you would receive additional pictures with your theme, or a different way to upload your own images.

Thanks, for the response, much faster than I anticipated.

I had already figured out how to get rid of the sample images and upload mine. I set one of my photos as logo and that works OK. I put the other as background, but it’s almost completely covered up, and I can just see a thin strip of it showing around the edges.

So I made enough progress on my own to reduce my frustration level. I will now now go through the links you have so kindly provided, thanks very much to both of you.
