Using Pages in more than one sidebar

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, I’m very new to WordPress and so would appreciate some advice!

I am using the Oxygen theme for a travel site. I have added a Pages widget to my primary sidebar (on the LHS), and made subpages listing destinations and tours. I want to add a Pages widget to my secondary sidear (on the RHS) for some different pages, but when I add the Pages widget to the secondary sidebar it just copies the pages from the primary sidebar. I gave the Pages widget in the secondary sidebar a different name but that name does not show up in All Pages, and there is no option to nest any pages just under the Pages widget in the secondary sidebar. What am I doing wrong? Or can the Pages widget only be used once?

    Thanks for your help.

The Pages widget allows you to exclude pages based on their Page ID. If you want, say, your Guides page to appear on the left side widget all by itself, you’d exclude all the other pages. To find the Page ID, you go to your Pages link in the Dashboard and mouse over the page title. Down in your links bar at the bottom of your browser window, you should see a link with a “&post=xx” section. That “xx” is the page ID number.

    Hi Susan

Thanks for your response. I’m having trouble finding the link you refer to to find the page number. From Dashboard I’ve gone into All Pages and hovered my mouse over a page title, but it shows Edit/Quick Edit/Trash/View. I can’t find a link bar at the bottom of the page – it only shows Bulk Actions dropdown menu at the bottom.

I’ve tried opening Edit Page, but I still can’t find “&post=xx”. The boxes are Publish, Page Attributes, Featured image, Writing helper, Likes and shares and box with the text and editing features.

Sorry to be an idiot, but it would be helpful if you could take me through stage by stage how to find the page ID number. Thanks.

It IS tricky! Your browser needs to be able to display the URL down at the very bottom of the screen. Here’s a screenshot of what it looks like. You’ll see my goofy red arrow pointing to the page ID number.

    Steps:

Open your Pages area in your Dashboard
Move your mouse over the top of the name of the page you want to identify.
Watch the very bottom of the page.
Get your pencil out and write down that page ID number while your mouse is still resting on the name of the page! :)

It only appears when your mouse hovers over the page title. It will disappear the minute you move the mouse off that page title. Does that make sense? Most browsers will display this information. Give it a try and see if yours does.

You are a genius! Thanks so much, I think I’ve got it!

I have one other query – can I ask you here or should I start a new query? On the top LHS of my site Wildlife Quest is written twice – the top one is a drop-down menu. I can’t work out how to get rid of it. There is nothing in my LHS sidebar apart from the Pages widget. The drop-down menu appears to be a Categories widget (am I wrong?), but I don’t know where it is in my Dashboard so I can edit or delete it.

    Thanks again for your help.

The one just under the image is a menu. Oxygen has three built-in menus and you’re using at least two of them. I believe if you go to Appearance > Menus and remove that Wildlife Quest menu item, then assign that menu to the first location, the Wildlife Quest will disappear. This worked for me but you may need to monkey around with it a bit. Have fun!

Done it – not quite sure how or why, since I’d deleted all Menus I’d created, but naming a new menu has made the other menu disappear… Thanks again for all your help.
