Using Penscratch – Link back to initial page seems broken
-
Hi,
I am using the Penscratch theme and I have 5 pages. Each time I go back to the back first page, it remains on the current page. All other pages are ok. I love love love this theme and really do not want to change. Any suggestions as how to fix this? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You have four static pages and one post. The homepage displays that one post. However, the first link in the header menu bar goes to the single post “Curriculum,” not to the homepage.
I was able to reproduce the error that you report. In several tests, I found that the “Curriculum” link works if you are on the homepage, but it fails if you are on any of the four static pages. It may be a bug. I’ll tag the topic for staff attention.

As musicdoc1 suggested, the problem here is with how the Curriculum menu link is formatted. The menu item “Curriculum” isn’t really connected to anything, so when it’s clicked it doesn’t know where to go.
If you tell me more about your intentions, I can help you fix it. Is Curriculum meant to be a static page like the others, or do you intend to have blog posts show there? We can make either work, they will just be formatted differently.

Hi there,
Thank you both for the responses. The 5 pages should all function the same. So once leaving the Curriculum page, you should just be able to go back and forth like you can with the the other 4 pages. Does that make sense?

Hi again,
Just to clarify this further after re-reading lizthefair’s post again, the curriculum page should present it’s self the same way that the others present themselves so if they are static, then yes. That is my intent anyway.

See the Post vs. Page support page. There are two separate but interrelated issues to address regarding your reported link failure:
1. “Curriculum” is not a page. It’s a post. The fact that it’s URL includes the publish date and that it appears on your posts (or blog) page is enough to establish that.
2. You have a custom menu item with the name, or navigation label, “Curriculum.” However, the link isn’t properly formed, as lizthefair indicates. If you wish to keep “Curriculum” as a post rather than as a static page the easiest fix might be to delete it and create a new link, at either your classic Menus page (https://mdowney76.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php) or at the new My Sites Menus page (https://wordpress.com/menusmdowney76.wordpress.com).
Changing “Curriculum” to a static page, and perhaps making it your static front page, is another way to go, which still involves correcting the custom menu link issue. Let us know if you’d prefer to change that to a static page rather than a post.

I meant delete the link, not the post.
-
After looking at the post vs page to enhance my understanding, I would like the first “curriculum'” page to be a page like the rest of the other pages, instead of post. How would I go about achieving this?
-
You create it just like you created the other static pages, starting at Pages > Add New. However, since the content already exists, you’ll just need to copy the content from the post, preferably in text mode, and paste it into the page editor window. Then publish the page, and add a link to it in your custom menu.
Do you wish to replace the post on your front page with a static page? That’s a separate task.
-
Does that mean I create a new one, then I delete the old one? I do wish to retain the information.
-
The page you are creating will contain all of the information of the post if you create it by copying and posting. But it is unnecessary to delete the post until you are entirely confident that the page has been successfully created.

Im starting to get a little confused. Sorry. I just tried adding another page. It kinda didn’t do what I expected. I really want everything to look pretty much the same but be able to toggle back to the ‘curriculum’ home page if I’m on another page. Currently it doesn’t do so.
So I am thinking that yes, I need to replace “curriculum” page a static page, not with a post as it currently is.
-
Perhaps you should wait for lizthefair to return. What happened with the new page? Did you copy and paste the content of the post into it?
-
No I didn’t get that far. I added a new page as per Pages > add and then I called it “Home” (to avoid) any confusion. Before I entered any info, I went in to have a look to see if a new page was there. But it appeared to have just gone in as a header in (under) the Curriculum post page. So I deleted it. All my original information is still there though?!
Does that makes sense? My IT terminology is extremely poor lol.
-
But it appeared to have just gone in as a header in (under) the Curriculum post page. So I deleted it.
Interesting. It sounds like you might have just added a menu item titled “Home” instead of adding a page. These are two entirely different actions.

Ok. I managed to add another page. I copied from the post to the new page, I have the text and lost my links, images etc so now I have to do a bit of visual enhancement! Not too bad though. I did do the copy and paste as recommended in text mode.
As I have now 5 pages, I went in to delete the ‘curriculum’ post. It deleted my written content etc however, I cannot delete the “post” curriculum header (which I’m referring to as the first tab/title).
I am feeling more confident in this process after playing but I really do think it is a bug in Penscratch itself.
To be honest I am just tempted to just change themes as the more I work on content of my site, the more change I have losing information if I wait until later. I’ve played with a few themes, some keep all my content and others don’t. It’s not my preferred option, I really like Penscratch but not sure what to do.
Do you have any recommendations before I make the big decision to switch or not?
-
P.S. I am going to do all my re-formatting, links and images etc back into the Post opposed to the new page. When all is done I will delete the new page, now called Curriculum2.
-
Update: I have reformatted my original curriculum ‘post’ and tried to delete my new Curriculum2 page.
I have deleted the curriculum2 page, and my dashboard is showing 1 post, 4 pages, as it should. However visually, the webpage is showing 1 post, 5 pages.
I hit the delete button, and I hit the apply button to no avail.
I am also still having the problem when I am on any other page, I can not them go back to my first, initial post page.
I appreciate the assistance, Penscratch is obviously not responding to any possible solutions.
-
Update: I have managed to delete my curriculum2 page. I deleted the page, but I did not go to the deleted box to then delete permanently.
I am now back to where I was where I started where I can’t access my Curriculum post if I move to a page.
