Using Portfolio Projects in Illustratr
-
Hi, I am writing in regards to the recontructedjournal.com blog I am an administrator on. We created the blog for a literary journal, and we’re trying to use the portfolio feature, but since this is so new for everyone, we don’t know how it meshes with pages and posts, nor how to display our content in a way that is conducive for a literary journal. We’re trying to create a ‘project’ for each genre (poetry, non-fiction, fiction) to display on the static main page and be available in a menu bar. Do you have any suggestions as to how we can achieve this? We’d like each submission (story, art, collection of art work) to show up as a post or a page in each portfolio project, but we just don’t know how. We’ve looked at the support for portfolios, but it’s just not making sense. Any suggestions would be fantastic. Thank you!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you cannot locate answers on the detailed theme support page at http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/illustratr/ or in the support docs at http://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/ and http://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/portfolio-shortcode/ then I suggest browsing the many Illustr threads as your issue has probably been answered in them.
In addition I tagged this thread for a Themes Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. Note there is a backlog so you will have to wait patiently for Staff help. To subscribe:
1. Look in the sidebar of this thread and find the subscribe to topics link.

I think I have a better idea of what I need to do – I saw something that indicated I could assign pages to the portfolio page template, but the directions underneath that indicated I could make the static page the portfolio page template. When I go into ‘reading’ settings and try to do that under the options for static page, I do not see all of my portfolios – I see pages that have already been created. What else can I do to assign one of the portfolios to the main static page?

I would suggest creating portfolio types for each genre (poetry, non-fiction, fiction).
Then add each submission as a project, and assign the appropriate type to it.
Think of each portfolio project as the individual creative work, for example a short story called “The Art of WordPress.” The portfolio type you’d assign to it would be “non-fiction.”
What else can I do to assign one of the portfolios to the main static page?
If you’d like your portfolio to appear as your homepage, you’ll need to choose the Portfolio page template from the Page Attributes box within your selected static homepage. Scroll down to “Portfolio Page Template” for full instructions here:

I’m using Sketch theme, but since there is close to zero info about that theme, I ended up here. Some of the info for illustratr was getting closer to my problem – which is:
How do I set my Portfolio Archive Page as my home page.
The info on for illustratr did show how to change the front page to “Portfolio Page Template” but that is not corresponding to the Portfolio archive page – also shown on the show case page.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi kpuro –
How do I set my Portfolio Archive Page as my home page.
The Sketch support page explains how to do that:
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sketch/
Portfolio Page Template
Portfolio Page Template – This template will display your portfolio and allow you to set your portfolio as the site’s front page.
When you first activate Sketch, you’ll see your posts in a traditional blog format. If you’d like to use the portfolio page template as the front page of your site, as the demo site does, it’s simple to configure:
1. Create or edit a page, and assign it to the Portfolio Page Template from the Page Attributes module.
2. Go to Settings → Reading and set “Front page displays” to “A static page”.
3. Select the page you just assigned the Portfolio Page Template to as “Front page” and set another page as the “Posts page” to display your blog posts.By default, the page title and post content will appear. You can hide them if you prefer by going to Appearance → Customize → Theme and check “Hide title and content on Portfolio Page Template” option.
The portfolio page template displays your portfolio archives.
If you have any other questions just let me know.
