Using pre-purchased domain with WordPress

Help! I’ve purchased a domain through Site Builder, but have decided I now want to go through WordPress. I can’t seem to find any way of using the domain I’ve purchased (for 3 years) without paying an additional $17 per year to WordPress to have it ‘mapped’. I don’t really want to change the domain as I spent long enough trying to find one that wasn’t already taken or similar. I’m a complete novice when it comes to doing anything other than basic computer skills, so anything advanced won’t work unless someone can talk me through it. Anyone able to help??

    Hi yarildah,

If you want to set up your domain with WordPress.com, I am afraid the mapping fee can’t be waived. $17 per year is actually a pretty good deal considering you can host your content for free, get access to most WordPress features, and enjoy rock solid reliability and support.

If you’d rather not pay the mapping fee, you can set up a WordPress.org site by paying for your own web host, which usually is a more complicated setup and costs more than $17 per year.

Would it mean that I have to pay renewal fees with Site Builder plus mapping fees with WordPress from here on though? Even after the three years has expired?

Yes, you have to pay for both domain renewal (after 3 years) and domain mapping (every year). Think of the latter as the web hosting fees that you’d otherwise pay to have your website hosted.

    Domain mapping is $13.-/yr USD
