Using Reserved site name
-
Hi,
I am currently making a site for the Ocean Engineering Research Centre of Memorial University, and would like to change the old url of the site to a new site name. When trying to change the site name, I was not allowed, the reason being that the site was “reserved”.This may have been my own mistake. When I was trying to figure our how to change the domain, I first went to my user settings and changed it there, only to realize that it did not affect the actual blog website. When I then tried to change it via the my blogs page on my dashboard, I was met with the previously mentioned problem.
Thank you.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

As such I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do to get back the site name. I’ve already switch the URL on my user settings back to my old URL.
-
Depending on what you did the name might be able to be used – however we need the names you are asking about to give you accurate help

I’ve typed in web address I want to use and it does not direct me to a specific blog, so I’m assuming it is not used.
I would prefer not to so no one takes it. It’s not a very common name, just don’t want someone to troll me.

When we register a username account the matching blog is reserved for our future use. It cannot be obtained by anyone other than the person who has registered the matching username account.

So if I get a message saying the address is reserved and cannot find an actual website corresponding to the address, then there is probably a user with that name?

Is there no other reason it would be reserved? I can’t see how someone would have the username that would prevent me from using the address I want.

If you want me to tag this thread for a Staff response I’ll gladly do that but the answer I provided for over 7 years now will not change. Only those with the matching username can register the blog.
You can register another blog with a similar name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/
Or you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade and it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.

Seeing as there is nothing they can do if the name is reserved, I don’t think that will be necessary. Thank for your help. There was recently another thread I looked at where your comment helped me out, so thank you for that as well.

I’m sorry the answer wasn’t the one you wanted to hear. You’re welcome and best wishes with your blogging.
