Using RSS feeds for member updates?
-
Hello,
I am a web designer and new to wordpress. I am thinking about creating a site that has multiple categories where users can post services they have for other users to see. Can I handle this through multiple RSS feeds on one site? For example I would have users subscribe to whichever categories they are interested in and then would receive daily updates of what others have posted in that category.
Second question, can an RSS feed be sent via e-mail to the users who subscribe?
This is a little new to me and I’m not a programming guru, but I think I could figure it out if it’s possible. I’ve done a little research and it seems potentially possible but I thought posting with the experts would be the quickest way to find out if it is. TIA!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Let’s start with this. No one can post anything to your blog unless they have a username account and you have made them an official user of the blog. See here for the roles you can assign and how to add users >

This will not provide daily updates re: Category feeds by email. It will provide updates of new posts on the feedreader only after you publish new posts you assign to the Category.
If you wish you can use feedburner for daily updates of new posts only by email. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/blog-subscriptions/
We do have blog subscriptions for readers to receive new posts by email.

WordPress.com blogs cannot be equipped for ecommerce transactions and we have advertising restrictions as well. In a nutshell free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM cannot be used to drive traffic to third-party sites by means of advertising and/or affiliate programs. E-commerce cannot be conducted on wordpress.COM blogs. No retailing or reselling the work created by anyone other than yourself is allowed.
types of blogs allowed and not allowed > http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/
no using wordpress.com blogs to drive traffic to thrid party sites > http://en.wordpress.com/tos/
no blogger initiated advertising > http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/ -
So wordpress.org may be the place to create the site I am looking for. I am not trying to advertise per se, but I am looking to create a community that hooks people up with each other service wise. Does wordpress.org have the same RSS features mentioned above, but I have to host/update myself?

Yes, the same RSS feed features I posted above are found on wordpress.ORG installs for self hosting and operate in the same way.

You DEFINITELY need to be at WordPress.org. You’ll find that a much more suitable platform,
