Using Star Ratings in Rich Snippets. Help?

    I’ve got a blog on WP.com which is beginning to pick up traffic. I primarily review games, and you can find the site at: http://www.homebehindthesun.com.

    I’ve got authorship rich snippet fully functional (which consisted of putting the HTML in text widget hidden away), so I thought I’d try to get the star ratings for each of my reviews to show up too. I got it working, but here’s my problem:

    When I place the html in the post, for example:

    <div class=”hreview”>
    <span class=”item”>
    <span class=”fn”>Child Of Light</span>
    </span>
    <span class=”rating”>3.5 out of 5</span>
    <span class=”reviewer”>Darren Thackeray</span>
    <span class=”dtreviewed”>2014-05-05</span>
    <span class=”summary”>”Just falls short of greatness…”</span>
    </div>

    it seems to attach itself to the WHOLE site, not just the individual post. So when I use the structured data test tool and pop in my homepage, it rates it 3.5 out of 5! Same with any post/page.

    How do I restrict the html to that individual post so that I can give each post a rich snippet rating?

    Help much appreciated :-)

  • Hey Darren!

    My advice would be to use the More Tag. What it does is it truncates your posts on the front page and leaves a “More…” link that leads to the full article.

    The idea is to insert the tag just before the author rich snippet. That way the HTML is restricted to the post and won’t apply to the rest of the site. As an example, I did this in your Child of Light” review:

    Check out how the tag works on your front page:

    Let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you. Thanks!

    Hey Andrew, thanks so much for your help! I hadn’t considered incorporating the ‘more’ tag but it works superbly and I can now apply star ratings to individual posts – awesome.

    The only thing is, now authorship doesn’t seem to work. Even though I’ve placed my rel author tag in there. It always worked before but now I can’t get anything. I know that in SERPs Google won’t show your image AND the review snippet, but authorship isn’t even being detected on the page anymore.

    For the record, my author tag is:

    it seems to have been working fine til now. Any help appreciated :-).

    Thanks again,

    Darren.

  • Hello Darren!

    Glad to hear my suggestion worked! Have you tried linking your blog to your Google+ profile?

    This should set you up as your blog’s author. Let me know if you run into problems doing this. Thanks!
