Using the menu bar for accessing categories

I dislike the categories on the left hand side of my page so I created the categories and then added those names to the top menu bar and inserted a re-direct code. This seems like a slow way of doing things but I am unsure of how else to do this. Has anyone got any suggestions or maybe there is a plugin for it? I couldn’t find one.
