Using the More tag causes problems for sidebar
-
Whenever I try to use the More tag (on my long posts) my sidebar gets removed from the side and moved to the bottom of the page.
Am I doing something wrong?
my blog is at http://www.rhetoricwizard.wordpress.com
Thanks a lot

Is it doing it to you with the “I was never the little girl with the balloons” post, or every single one of them? If it is just that one, I suspect it is because of the photo being at the top of the post. Photos have a way of making the sidebar unhappy. If it is that post causing you the headache, move it down a bit and try again, and keep the photo after the more tag.

It happens on any post. I’ve tried it several times. I’m too longwinded not to live without a More tag!!!
Thanks for your help so far!

I’ve switched my test blog to Dusk and put in the more tag on a test post and cannot get it to do what yours is doing. What are you using to write and post your stuff? Are you copying and pasting from somewhere like MS Word or something by chance?

@rhetoricwizard
Put a more tag in one of your posts temporarily so that I can look at it and see if I can determine what is happening. -
Sorry it too me so long to reply thesacredpath, I just added a more tag to my short story post and everything went weird.

Did you copy that in out of MS Word or something? It has code in it that isn’t like your other posts.
I would open that post for edit, copy all the text to the clipboard then delete it all and reinsert it using the “paste as plain text” icon on the extended toolbar.

I think I fixed the weird Word code from that post, but the sidebar is still being wonky. I’ve attempted the More tag on other posts as well that did not come out of word, and the same thing still happens.
I post mostly out of Explorer (it’s what we have at work) and Firefox when I’m at home.

There is a bit of code somewhere in one of your posts that is likely causing the problem however finding it can be time consuming.
Once place to start is here: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Frhetoricwizard.wordpress.com%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0 . There are 23 errors reported on your main page that you should review and check in your posts. If you open each of your posts over the past while and then use the clean up messy code function that might fix the problem. You can also go into the “code” tab, select everything in the post and then use the “close tags” function in the tool bar in the code view.
There is also the chance it may be something in a widget. Have you added or changed anything in a widget lately?
If none of that works, then it’s a matter of going through each post in code view looking for anything that may cause a problem. I wish I could be more help.

If you look at the link in the above here are a couple things that can cause problems
end tag font omitted
end tag font present but no open font tags before it
end tag for span missing
ending p tags where there isn’t an open p tag before it
div tag used where it is not allowed
end tag for div missing
