using the taxonomy argument in the display posts shortcode

  Are there detailed instructions with examples for using the taxonomy argument in the display posts shortcode? What I would like to do is exclude a post category from a page without having to specify all the others. Something like:

  taxonomy = category tax_term = [category name] tax_operator = OUT

  seems like it out to work but I clearly don’t understand how to use the argument.
