Can I use WordPress just to build a site and then have it hosted somewhere else? I already have a hosting plan with another hosting company.

Once i build the site, do I own the files? can I download them and use them as I want?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hello there,

I suspect there may be some confusion happening here, so I’m hoping the following will be useful.

Can I use WordPress just to build a site and then have it hosted somewhere else? I already have a hosting plan with another hosting company.

There are two types of WordPress. The first is WordPress.com, which is a managed hosting solution whereby we take care of everything for you (including updates, security, and making sure there’s no downtime).

The second is called self-hosted WordPress – which is where the open source version of the software is downloaded from WordPress.org and installed on a hosting provider.

The differences between the two can be seen here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ and the two would be considered separate.

If you have hosting with another provider, but WordPress is not in use there, you may want to switch over to WordPress.com. Would you be willing to tell me more about the site you’re looking to build and what features you require? I’ll happily try and offer insights on which plan to choose and the required next steps.

Once i build the site, do I own the files? can I download them and use them as I want?

Yes you do – one of the great things about WordPress is that it’s portable, no matter which type of WordPress you use.

I hope this helps and I look forward to hearing from you.
