Using WordPress as a headless CMS

Hi I’m looking to build my website using WordPress as headless CMS, I’m not sure if WordPress.com or WordPress.org would be the best fit.
First of all would this be possible on the .com site if I upgrade to the business plan?
Would I need to host my separate frontend on another hosting platform?
Can I access the REST api on a .com site?

The site I need help with is [visible only to staff] (email visible only to moderators and staff).

  • Hi! We do have a rest api and documentation here:
    https://developer.wordpress.com/

And while I’m not a developer, I’m pretty sure you can access the API regardless of plan.

You would just need a Business Plan if you need to add outside code to the WordPress instance itself — usually that would come in the form of a theme or a plugin, rather than an entirely separate front end. I can’t say I’ve seen a case like this, but you’d be welcome to buy the plan and set up some hello world type stuff to see if it works for you. If it doesn’t, you can refund, so long as you do so within the refund period:
