Using wordpress.com as a freelancer
-
Hi there,
I am a new developer looking to create a basic website for a client. My client wants their website created on WordPress. Through my research, I decided that wordpress.com would be a good fit for them. However, I am not confident that wordpress.com has the capability to transition from me as the developer over to the client. Is this a possibility? Any help you can provide me on this point would be greatly appreciated.
If the transition is a possibility, I have another question. A custom domain name is included for the first year, how can my client be confident that they can continue with that same domain name after the first year?
Thanks,

Will you be buiding a free site here at WordPress.com and then upgrading it to a paid plan to register/connect/transfer a domain? Will you be building the site under your account and then transferring ownership of the site? Does the client already have an account here at WordPress.com? I’d think it would be easier to get the client to have initial ownership of site via their email credentials if only for future payments that would be required for paid plan and domain and to then they could share the log in details with you if you are the one who will be doing the site-building.

Hi there,
It sounds like you’ll be building the site, and then handing it over to the client entirely, so they’ll continue managing it without further involvement from you?
In that case I’d recommend create the site in your account, and add the upgrades needed for the work you have to do. Then, once you’re done, you can transfer the entire site, including upgrades to your client (they’ll just need to create their own WordPress.com username account for this).

Once the upgrade plan and domain are transferred to their account, they’ll be able to add their own billing details to enable automatic renewal of the upgrades going forward, and we’ll send renewal reminders to their account email address well in advance of the upgrades expiring.
Another option is the one @themagicrobot mentioned above: have your client create the site and buy the upgrades, and then invite you as an admin so you have the access you need to work on it. Then, once you’re done, you can just remove your admin account from the site again.
It really depends on how technically literate your client is, and how you prefer to do this :)

To clarify, that means the initial domain registration is included with the plan, but not any future renewals. To continue using the same domain, all your client needs to do is ensure they renew the domain every year.
