Using WordPress for website

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I have a website [www.archives.net.au] and want to use WordPress to update/re-do it. I know I’ll have to start again, entering all my information etc but can’t seem to get WordPress to act like a website – pages linked to other pages etc.. it all seems to be more for blogs. I have looked for a couple of hours so hope I’m not being too dumb! Can you help please? Cheers Julie

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Julie,

pages linked to other pages etc..

I’m not quite sure what this means. Can you please elaborate?

Also, please note that the words site and blog are used interchangeably here on WordPress.com. There isn’t a separate sign up or theme for a site as opposed to a blog. They’d be exactly the same.

I’m assuming the differences you want between a blog and site would be that you’d want a custom menu and static pages like a Home page, Contact Page, etc. And then you may want a separate page for all your posts (blog type posts).

In order to do this you can create a Home Page by going to Pages > Add new in your Dashboard. This is a static page that would be the page your readers view the minute they visit your site. After you published that, create another page titled Blog, Posts or whatever you want if you want a separate page with all your posts. Leave this page empty, but publish it.

Then go to Settings > Reading in your Dashboard. At the top where it says Front Page displays: select a static page and set the the Home page you just created as your Front Page, and the Blog or Posts page as your Posts page. If you don’t want a Posts page, you can leave that blank.

Finally, if you want to create a Custom Menu you can by going to Appearance > Menus in your Dashboard. Please view the link for further instructions.

As for your domain, if you want to point it to your WordPress.com site, all you have to do is update the nameservers:

    This article explains how:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

The name servers for WordPress.com are:

    • NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

If you’re not sure how to change them, please contact your registrar for assistance.

Once you have updated the name servers, it may take up to 48 hours for the domain to be pointed to your WordPress.com site. Let me know if you have any questions with this!

Thank you for that, the problem seems to be I’m wanting a site, rather than a blog set-up – no posts at all, pages linked to each other, etc..
I have a home [landing] page, from that I have 4 other pages – one for prices, one for designs etc.. All pages have to be linked to each other so from any page, customers can switch back and forth – for instance, from “designs” to “prices”
Hope that makes it clearer. Kind regards,
    Julie

I may have found out how to achieve what I want – I hadn’t seen the Custom Menu earlier. I’ll keep working at it but any tips you have that would make this easier would be greatly appreciated. I am finding it a little hard to get away from a blog type set-up
    Kind regards,
    Julie

    Hi Julie,

If you just want pages, the best way to add them to your site would be to create all the pages you need by going to Pages > Add new in your Dashboard. Once you have created everything you need, just follow the directions for a Custom Menu. Then you should have the basis of your site.

Once you finish that and want to do some customizations, let me know if you have any questions with that!

Thank you for that – really appreciated. Hopefully I won’t be bugging you too much :)

    No problem at all!

I am very upset at receiving a receipt for $99 this morning. I did not want to continue with WordPress and wrote to say so.

I would like the $99 refunded immediately.

I gave my reasons in a previous email.

No problem. It has been canceled and removed from your site as requested. Please note that it may take up to a week for the refund to show up in your bank account.
