You’ll probably be better served using the self-hosted, WordPress.org version. Here’s a quick overview of the difference, but I think the key that applies to you is that on WordPress.org you can download the software yourself and install it on your own service, whereas here at WordPress.com they’re more of a host for the software, taking care of a lot of the technical details so people can focus more on content.

D’oh! Install on your own server, not service.

Cheers jqubed. I used wordpress.org for a portfolio site last year (i am a student doing web development) i also created a website for a client last year just with html5 and css and a bit of php and this year adding a backend to it with an admin login so the client is able to update photos and content themselves.

I’m fairly certain (though it’s been years since I’ve done anything with self-hosted WordPress; hoping to change that some upcoming weekend) that if you know what you’re doing with HTML, CSS, and PHP you could take the frontend you’ve already designed and make that work with WordPress to take care of the content management on the backend. It would really be more like creating or customizing a theme for WordPress than anything else, and you won’t be reinventing the wheel since it’s already a powerful content management system. You’ll also have a lot more flexibility with your own (or your client’s, I guess) installation of WordPress; because of the nature of the service on WordPress.com things get more locked-down because all the blogs are running on the same software. With your own installation of the software you can change and tweak whatever you need to.
