  • Hi,

If I already own a domain, and have already created a WordPress site

Just to clarify, when you say “have already created a WordPress site” do you mean “Have already created a site on WordPress.com”? Or do you mean that you have a WordPress site created and hosted elsewhere?

I mean that chewietellsall.wordpress.com is a site I have already created using WordPress. If I already own chewietellsall.com, is there a way that chewietellsall.com could point to chewietellsall.wordpress.com?

While you can purchase a domain without a plan (either here at WordPress.com or at your own domain registrar), in order to have your domain be your primary domain you need a paid plan. Otherwise, your domain will redirect to your free *.wordpress.com URL.

We are working on further options for our plans, including as-you-need them add-ons for both plans, to give you a la carte upgrades like using your own domain on your site. We don’t know when those will be added, but we will post an announcement on our blog when that happens.

    I hope that clarifies things!

Thank you for the information! How do I get my domain to redirect to my free wordpress.com URL?

  • You can do that by entering your custom domain in the field here, and then following the steps on-screen: https://wordpress.com/domains/add/use-my-domain/chewietellsall.wordpress.com

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

I tried following the steps, and got a message I had to upgrade to WordPress Pro. I want to know how I can get my domain to redirect to my WordPress site, without it being my primary domain. The previous response implied it was possible to do this without a paid plan. If that is the case, how can I do it? Thank you!

That was me! I re-read what I posted and I realize my information wasn’t correct. The correct answer is that you can set that redirect to your free URL only if you register the domain with us. I corrected my post above as well. Apologies for the wrong information initially.

Since you registered the domain elsewhere, your only option at this time would be to upgrade to a paid plan where you can choose to redirect the domain to your free URL, or set your domain as primary.

To clarify: If I upgrade to WordPress Pro at $15/month, I get a free domain for one year, plus other perks, including the ability to set that domain to primary.

If I register my domain with you, I can have that domain point to my WordPress site. Is there a way to register/transfer a domain to you without purchasing WordPress Pro? If so, what is the link to do that? Thank you!

I found some info on the site….it looks like I can transfer a domain to WP for $18/year. If I do this, is there any additional charge to have the domain point to my WP site?

    My goal:
Someone types in chewietellsall.com, and chewietellsall.wordpress.com appears. The full WP name (chewietellsall.wordpress.com) is visible in the url bar instead of chewietellsall.com.

  • Hi there, yes, that is correct, you can fully realize your goal by transferring the domain registration to WordPress.com for just $18/year: https://wordpress.com/support/incoming-domain-transfer/

Please let us know if you have any more questions!
