using wordpress with html tables

hey there,
I want to create a custom wordpress theme for my blog, is it possible for me to use html tables to do it or does it have to be totally in css with the <div> and what not?
Any help would be really really helpful

CSS editing at wordpress.COM is theme specific.You can purchase a CSS editing upgrade and create using the Sandbox 1.6 theme. If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.
Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.
If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

Yes, you can use tables on wp.com blogs. You can write them yourself in HTML, or use on Livewriter or other offline editor (sadly, none for Macs).

You can use HTML within posts and pages, but you cannot use straight HTML to build a wordpress theme. WordPress themes have to be dynamic, and have to interface with MySQL databases, and HTML alone cannot do that. WordPress themes are written in PHP script with bits of other stuff thrown in where needed.
Also, CSS is not for markup (HTML) it is simply a document of styling settings served to the browser so that the browser can properly render the elements of any particular page.

It should also be noted that we cannot create or upload our own themes here at wordpress.COM. If you want to build your own theme, you will have to self-host a blog.
