Using WordPress.com with a .org domain name
-
Hi,
I created a blog using WordPress.com but would like to have a custom domain name with .org. WordPress offers an upgrade to get the .org domain name. Does this mean my blog will now be hosted at WordPress.org and I will have to do the hosting myself + other technical details I don’t want to be involved in? I’m kind of confused here.To be clear, I want to continue using WordPress.com to enjoy the benefit of just focusing on my content while the WordPress team handles the technical aspects. However, I prefer to use .org for my blog name. Is there a way of pulling this off without actually using WordPress.org as the primary blog host?
Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
WordPress.org is not a hosting company. Learn about domains here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

You would need to domain map the .ORG name to your blog here – you will still be hosted here – just the address changes that visitors see when they visit your site

Thanks!
To follow up, is there a reason to use either .com, .net or .org for your domain name? Or is it just a matter of preference? -

I would say it is a matter of preference these days.
When the Domain Name System was devised, in the 1980s, the domain name space was divided into two main groups of domains. The country code top-level domains (ccTLD) were primarily based on the two-character territory codes of ISO-3166 country abbreviations. In addition, a group of seven generic top-level domains (gTLD) was implemented which represented a set of categories of names and multi-organizations. These were the domains gov, edu, com, mil, org, net, and int.
