'Varia' Customized Styles Not Applying

  • Unknown's avatar

If I go to Design->Customize, the website displays how I want with a black background and a few text changes.

However this isn’t working, and the website background is stuck as white – which is a shame because I designed this to be high-contrast and now it’s not at all. Is there some problem with a specific theme (I’m using “Varia”) or something else?

If anyone can help, I’d really appreciate it!

  • Hi there,

The Varia theme is best thought of as a “starter theme” for developers, and is best used in tandem with custom CSS (not an option on free sites) to customize it to suit.

If you do not plan on upgrading to our Premium plan (which has the CSS option) or feel comfortable with using CSS code to customize your site, I think you may find it easier to work with one of the “Varia child themes” which are pre-styled offshoots of Varia.

Since you mention wanting a dark background, I would recommend this one as a starting point, since most of our sites to have a light colored background: https://wordpress.com/theme/rivington

By default Rivington has a dark blue background, but it can be made deep black without issue. You can see in the video here it works with black as well as any variety of bold colors that look best with white text. https://d.pr/v/2igGrz

    Hope this helps!

    Hi jerrysarcastic,

Thank you, that does help. However, you are right to note that the free plan has no option to edit CSS…

I feel if a Theme won’t let you change the background then the Customization option for doing that should be greyed out or have a warning that it won’t apply on a free plan.

I’ll have to see if I can get a similar effect with a different Theme…
