Varia Theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I like the text/font that the Varia theme uses. Which text/font does it use? That is the only theme that I found that uses that text/font. Can that text/font be used in other themes? If so please tell me how to do so. If not I would suggest making that text/font available in all the other themes.

I would also suggest making a font that looks like a typewriter text/font available in all the themes.

Does the free plan allow text/fonts to be uploaded? If not why?

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, every theme has its own fonts depending on that theme’s styling. Varia is using a generic Sans-Serif for the headers and Serif font family for the body.

For block based themes, you can choose font pairings in Global Styles directly in the Editor.

In WordPress.com’s older themes, it’s possible to select a different header and body font from a list of available fonts in the Customizer.

You can learn more about this at https://wordpress.com/support/custom-fonts/

Post back here if you have other questions about this topic.

In the WordPress Editor, click the Global Styles button. It’s the “A” button located between the Document Settings button and the green Jetpack button.

I do not see the “A” button. I looked in both my pages and posts but no “A” button.

If not “A” button does that mean the theme I am using does not have that option? I am using the Escutcheon theme.

For block based themes, you can choose font pairings in Global Styles directly in the Editor.

    What are block based themes?

  • Unknown's avatar

Block-based themes are those first themes you see when you open the Themes dashboard https://wordpress.com/themes/ or on you site’s Design>Themes and were made to take full advantage of the Block Editor.

Escutcheon https://wordpress.com/theme/escutcheon is not block-based so to change fonts you’ll open the Customizer > Fonts

  • Unknown's avatar

I did not see the font in Escutcheon that Varia has. Maybe Varia is the only one with that font.

Do you know of any other themes that have the same font that Varia has?

Can I somehow use the font Varia has in the Eschtcheon theme using the free plan?

I was not told the answer to why I was unable to see the “A” button.

    Thanks.

Hello again, I don’t believe that there are other WordPress.com themes that use generic Serif and Sans Serif font families as their main fonts, but I’ve added a modlook tag for Staff assistance in answering that.

As I mentioned earlier, Escutcheon is not one of the newer block-based themes, so you won’t find an “A” button for Global Styles in the Block Editor. Fonts in Escutcheon are changed in the Customizer.

Here’s a temporary screenshot comparing Escutcheon and Hever in the Block Editor

    (screenshot removed by mod)

  • Hi there,

I like the text/font that the Varia theme uses.

Can you specify which Varia theme you’re speaking of? Varia itself isn’t a theme that can be activated on a site, but is the basis on which several different themes are built.

The Varia base theme uses Helvitica Neue, but different themes built on top of it have their own fonts set. For example, Hever uses PT Sans, Brompton uses Lora, and Maywood uses IBM Plex Sans.

Can I somehow use the font Varia has in the Eschtcheon theme using the free plan?

The only fonts that can be used in Escutcheon are the ones listed in the Fonts section in the Customizer.

Lora and PT Sans are included there.

When I click on themes and advanced and the free themes at the bottom of the page I see the Varia theme. It is the font that is displayed there that I am asking about. I didn’t know that Varia was not a theme to use since it is listed in themes.

https://variademo.wordpress.com/ is where I see the font I am asking about.

Why can’t those with free plan upload fonts to use on WordPress?

I would also suggest making a font that looks like a typewriter text/font available in all the themes.

  • https://variademo.wordpress.com/ is where I see the font I am asking about.

That uses Helvetica Neue as I said above.

Why can’t those with free plan upload fonts to use on WordPress?

No plan can upload fonts to use on WordPress.com. Fonts are coded into a theme, so it requires modification of the theme itself to add additional fonts.

On the Business Plan this modification can be done using a plugin that imports the fonts, or by modifying the theme directly via a child theme. On other plans it’s possible to pick from a selection of free Google fonts, and premium Typekit fonts on our Premium plan and higher.

I would also suggest making a font that looks like a typewriter text/font available in all the themes.

What you describe is called a monospace font, and the Google fonts, Anonymous Pro, Droid Sans Mono that are available on WordPress.com, fall in this group and can be used on any theme that supports custom fonts.

You can also have your text display in a monospace font by adding it using the preformatted block even if your theme is not itself set to use a monospace font.

    Preformatted Block

What you describe is called a monospace font, and the Google fonts, Anonymous Pro, Droid Sans Mono that is available on WordPress.com, fall in this group and can be used on any theme that supports custom fonts.

How do I find themes that support custom fonts? What do I need to search for? I tried to search using a custom font but I couldn’t find any. I only want free themes.

You can also have your text display in a monospace font by adding it using the preformatted block even if your theme is not itself set to use a monospace font.

Thanks for telling me about that block. To make sure I understand right the preformatted block uses only the monospace font? Is that correct?

All our older themes in the theme showcase support custom fonts in the Customizer, that is, the themes that appear after you click the Show All Themes button in the showcase.

And the block editor themes that are listed first in the showcase offer some custom font options in the editor itself, as @justjennifer indicated above.

To make sure I understand right the preformatted block uses only the monospace font? Is that correct?

That is correct. Any formatting setting that’s called preformatted uses a monospace font. This is true for word processors like MS Word as well – word processors typically use a system font called Courier, and that’s also what’s used by default by most browsers for text added in a pre HTML tag (what the preformatted block does), though any theme could specify a different monospace font to use there instead.

How do I find out which fonts I could use on a different theme without changing to that theme? For example Dalton theme. That is a block based theme?

Please tell me how to set up a test blog. That I think is one way of testing different themes? Yes?

  • How do I find out which fonts I could use on a different theme without changing to that theme? For example Dalton theme. That is a block based theme?

Please see my reply above, where I explained this.

The themes you see at the top when you go to My Site ->Design ->Themes are our block editor themes. The themes that appear after you click the Show All Themes button are the ones that predate the block editor.

The second group of themes all support exactly the same set of custom fonts found in the Customizer. The block editor themes should all support the same set of fonts as one another in the editor.

Please tell me how to set up a test blog. That I think is one way of testing different themes? Yes?

A test blog is just an extra site in your account that you use for testing. So to create one, click on My Site, and click the link that should appear at the bottom of the menu saying Create New Site, then create it as you would any other site.

Most people prefer to keep their test sites private, but that’s completely up to you. Most people also import content from their main site to their test site, so they can try out themes with their actual content. Others create dummy test content instead. Again, that’s completely up to you.

Where do I find those fonts? I see the Space Mono font listed but none of the others. I am looking for these fonts using the Redhill theme.

I was able to import content from my main site.

If I want to change all the paragraphs in my post to the monospace font please tell the quickest way to do so. Is there a way to change the paragraph blocks all at once? If so how?

  • Where do I find those fonts? I see the Space Mono font listed but none of the others. I am looking for these fonts using the Redhill theme.

Redhill is a block-editor theme, so only has the fonts listed in the editor. Space Mono is the only monospace font available for the block editor themes.

The fonts I mentioned before are free Google Fonts found in the Customizer, and are only available on our older themes, as I’ve explained above.

Please tell me how do I set the test site private?

Any new site you create in your account is automatically set to private, and only becomes public once you launch it.

You can change the privacy settings for a site at My Site ->Manage ->Settings.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

If I want to change all the paragraphs in my post to the monospace font please tell the quickest way to do so. Is there a way to change the paragraph blocks all at once? If so how?

Click the A icon at the top, and change the font there, as @justjennifer explained in her reply to you at https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/varia-theme/#post-3521566

It does appear the options there are currently switched – if you set a base font it gets applied to headings and the heading font gets applied to paragraphs instead. I’ve reported that as a bug to our developers. But a font you set there will be applied to the entire site.

It is not possible to change the font on individual blocks, or per-post.

I meant if I wanted to change all my paragraphs using the paragraph block on a post to a preformated block all at once is that possible? If so how?
Or do I need to change each paragraph one at a time?

  • To transform multiple blocks at once, hold down the shift key and click on all the blocks to select them. Then click the paragraph block icon in the toolbar, same as you would to transform a single block.

But transforming multiple paragraph blocks into preformatted blocks is not possible – that transform is only available for single paragraph blocks.

Which transforms are possible for any given block and under which circumstances is specified in the block editor code, and I’m guessing there’s a technical reason why bulk-transformation to the pre-block is not possible in this case.
