Verification code not coming through to my phone

    I was asked for verification code which was to be texted to me, my phone # has not changed and the correct last 3 digits were displayed by WordPress, but the text has not come through. I still had one of the old saved codes from years ago which I hadn’t used and that has let me in this time but now I’m stuck for verification code if asked for it again and it still not getting delivered to my phone. And I can’t see anywhere to contact WordPress directly to address this! I haven’t been on in a couple of years but getting back to now, have not had a problem with veri. code coming to my phone previously. Can anyone shed light please?

    Howdy –

    Thanks for getting in touch. It sounds like there might be a delay or issue with your sms on the cellular provider. Try contacting your network to inquire about any issues on their end. We did send an sms code 2 days ago.

    Hmm, the code still hasn’t come through 2 days later, I’ll check in with my carrier but not sure why that would be. Can I get some more hard-copy codes? Don’t want this to happen again when I need to get in. X Claire

    Hi Claire,

    When you first set up two-step authentication we gave you a list of ten backup codes to print out for use in a situation like this, and our logs show you confirmed at the time that you’d printed out those codes. Only one of those ten codes have been used to date.

    If you no longer have them, you can generate a new set of backup codes at any time from https://wordpress.com/me/security/two-step/

    Note that generating new codes will completely invalidate any remaining backup codes generated previously.

    I would strongly recommend you consider using an authenticator app instead of SMS, though. Not only is it more secure, as it cannot be bypassed by someone doing a sim-swop on your phone number, but it also does not reply on having a mobile signal as the codes are generated on your device itself.

    Also make sure you set up a backup phone number at https://wordpress.com/me/security/account-recovery/ so you have a second option if your first method doesn’t work.
