Verification error with Googlewebmaster tool
-
Hi all,
I cannot seem to get my site to verify on Google webmaster tools. I followed all of the steps precisely in this support doc:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/For some reason the site will not verify. I get an error stating, “Verification failed for….using the Meta tag method. We couldn’t find the verification meta tag.”
Any help would be greatly appreciated! The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
I just verified my site using Google Webmaster Tools just now. It went through. I also followed everything here step by step: https://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/#google-webmaster-tools. I didn’t get the error you got. Perhaps you’d want to do it again slowly step by step just to make sure everything is set.

@anissajean
Make sure that while following this process you don’t close any browser tabs. That’s the most common mistake that prevents it from verifying.Go to Webmaster Tools and get your meta-tag. Then open you WP.com dashboard WITHOUT closing the Google tab. Save the tag in the WP.com dashboard, then go back to the open Google tab to verify. Let us know if it still won’t work.

Hi @anissajean,
It looks like the meta tag is correctly entered here:
https://rextremendaethoughts.wordpress.com/wp-admin/tools.php
Are you still having trouble verifying your site or were you able to get this worked out?
-
Thanks for the help everyone but I am still not able to verify the site. I don’t know why. I keep receiving the same error:
“Verification failed for http://rextremendaethoughts.wordpress.com/ using the Meta tag method (less than a minute ago). We couldn’t find the verification meta tag.
Verify your ownership of http://rextremendaethoughts.wordpress.com/. Learn more.” -
That’s odd – I just went through the steps listed on the support page, and it worked for me right away. Can you try going through all of the steps from scratch (remove the existing code)?

Hi jeremeylduvall,
I just tried the whole process again from scratch and it still will not verify in Google webmaster tools. Everything seems to go correctly on the WordPress side but not when I click “verify” in Google webmaster. I don’t know why it isn’t working. Any other ideas that I could try?
Thanks for the help! -
When you navigate to the following URL, do you see the site listed?
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en
If so, can you use the link shown here to click “Add/Remove” users?
From that next page, click Manage Site Owners in the top right-hand side:
On the bottom of the page, can you let me know if you see any “Verified Owners” or “Verification Attempts”?
-
Hi jeremeylduvall,
I went to that link and on the “Manage site” dropdown there are only two options: Verify this Site and Delete site so it does not provide the option to Add/Remove users.
I can’t add/remove users because it is not verified even though the site is listed there. -
Perfect! So, it should look like this (not verified):
Is that correct? If so, please follow these steps:
1. From the dropdown on the right-hand side of the page, click “Verify Site” as shown here:
2. Using the “Recommended Method,” copy the entire meta tag as shown here:
3. Paste that entire Meta tag (don’t worry about pulling out just the numbers) under Google Webmaster Tools here:
https://rextremendaethoughts.wordpress.com/wp-admin/tools.php
4. Scroll down to the bottom of that page to save your changes.
5. On the Google page, click Verify Now. You should receive a success message like this:
Can you give that a try?

Hi jeremeylduvall,
Thanks for hanging in there with me. I have followed these steps numerous times and each time I get that error message. I have no idea why it won’t verify. I pasted the meta tag (you can see it in my admin tools) and I scrolled down to save changes. I then go back to the Google page and click verify and I receive the same error each time. -
Hi!
Sorry for overlooking this – your site is private. It will need to be public for the verification to work. You can change this under Settings -> Reading from your Dashboard. Can you give that a try?
-
Hi jeremeylduvall,
You are right! Of course, it didn’t work because my site was private! Thanks so much, it is verified now. I really appreciate your help! Thanks SO much!
