verifying WordPress.com site with mailerlite (email forwarding question)

    Hello,

In making a mailerlite account I am told to present them with a site specific email address :

“We need to verify that you have access to an email address that is connected to your website domain. For example, http://www.mailerlite.com and (email visible only to moderators and staff). Please enter your email address and we’ll send you a verification email.”

So the solution I’m told is to set up ’email forwarding’, and I’ve done this, a customer typing (email visible only to moderators and staff) will forward the mail to a personal outlook account of mine.

    Two questions :

1 if I give mailerlite the site email address now, I would have to click the confirmation on my outlook site. The sent and received adresses do not match. Is this acceptable?

2 On the guide I followed it states it is possible to set up a ‘mask’ – “tie the domain name to an email mask” , so the customer will see that the mail is from (email visible only to moderators and staff) (not (email visible only to moderators and staff)). This seems desirable. In the search results no clear guide comes up about email mask for outlook, there are things like ‘modify From field’ and ‘alias’.

? does mailerlite accept ’email mask’ ?
??? what about phishing ? can a malicious person create a mask exact as ‘(email visible only to moderators and staff)’ and bind it to their out account (this would be bad)

? is my option just to have an inbox of customer mail but no sending of mail to them through site email address ?

I need some clarification, please. and if its acceptable I don’t know what Outlook calls ’email masking’.

    Thank you – Kr

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

1 if I give mailerlite the site email address now, I would have to click the confirmation on my outlook site. The sent and received adresses do not match. Is this acceptable?

Mailerlite is just trying to confirm that you own the email address in question, and they confirm that by you clicking the link in the email. So as long as you’re able to receive the email from them and click that link, it shouldn’t matter that you can’t send emails from the forwarding address.

2 On the guide I followed it states it is possible to set up a ‘mask’ – “tie the domain name to an email mask” , so the customer will see that the mail is from (email visible only to moderators and staff) (not (email visible only to moderators and staff)). At the bottom of the email forwarding support page we link to instructions how to set this up an some email providers, including Outlook:

    https://wordpress.com/support/add-email/email-forwarding/#changing-your-from-address

We’re not able to help you set up something like this, though, as it’s something you set up at another provider where we have no access to your account.

If you want an email address that can both send and receive email, we recommend a fully-hosted email inbox instead. You can buy that service directly from us using our Titan Email offering, you can buy a Google Workspace subscription through us, or you can connect an inbox from another provider like Office 365 or Zoho email to your domain:

? does mailerlite accept ’email mask’ ?

You’ll need to contact support at Mailerlite to find out what they do and don’t support. But this has nothing to do with Mailerlite – this is essentially an alias that you configure at your own email provider, so in Outlook in this case, that controls what they display as the FROM email address when you email someone from that account.

??? what about phishing ? can a malicious person create a mask exact as ‘(email visible only to moderators and staff)’ and bind it to their out account (this would be bad)

Anyone can make it seem like an email they send is coming from another address, yes. This is referred to as spoofing an email address, and is a common tactic used by scammers to trick people. There’s no way to prevent someone from doing this with your email address. Ultimately it’s up to whoever receives an email to verify that it’s really coming from the address it says it’s coming from.
