Version 2.7: Where is the View Page link?
-
Hmmm, that is something staff will have to work on. I know a couple others that have done that and will have the same problem.
-
We have to remove the blog title. The loaded name imprints over our custom banner. If someone figures it out, please let me know. As it is now, I have to type my blog address into the browser to pull it up from the dashboard (unless I’m missing something). Thanks all.
-
@quoinmonkey: See my 3:20 AM post above.
(Plus I think you should have your front page bookmarked in the principal bookmark bar of your browser.)
-
@q – with the theme you are using, the blog title displays ABOVE the custom banner. Maybe you were using another theme before that did that. Without the blog title, anyone who subscribes to your feed doesn’t get the blog name in the feed. (And I’m not sure how it affects the Google thing.)
-
We’ve got news – no name problem just corrected: now if you don’t have a blog name you get the link to your blog instead in the Dashboard.
-
@panaghiotisadam, yes, thanks. I read your comment but when I just reread it again, I went back and realized that there is a drop-down that appears under the title of each post that lets you View it. I think that’s a good temporary solution to the problem. And I’ll use it in the meantime. Thanks.
The only downsides: (1) I have to be under the Posts list to get to my Main Page and can’t just click on the Main Page from anywhere in the Dashboard. (2)It only takes me to that particular post and the comment thread under it and not to the Main Page of the blog. I have to then hit Home to see the whole blog.
The other solution you mention of using the Preview button when publishing doesn’t seem very feasible to me, since I have to be actually creating a new post to use that solution. Also, it takes me into a new tab rather than pulling the page up in the same window, which is kind of like opening up a whole other blog page.
But for now, I’ll pull up all of the posts and then hit View, then Home. However, I hope a “View Site” button of some kind is restored in the future for those of us who use custom banners. When we have a custom banner and don’t put in our blog name, another downside is that our blog name then doesn’t show up in other places on WordPress. I think it’s a bug (and was in the old versino as well) and there needs to be another place where you add the name of your blog that doesn’t connect to the banner area. Thanks to all. Much appreciated.

Most of the themes allow custom headers. A lot of them have the ability to turn off the name. As I mentioned above, the blog name on your theme does not interfere with the header. For those themes that it does, best bet is to contact support and have them implement the hide blog title thing on it.

@vivianpaige, we must have been typing near the same time. Yeah that’s true and is one of the bugs I was talking about in that our blog name does not appear across WordPress when we use a custom banner like this and this template and that was true of the old WordPress version, too. Yes, the blog name appears above our banner, therefore kind of defeating the purpose of having a custom banner. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure when we first started out, we tried other templates where you could change out the banner and the blog name appeared over the banner there as well.
-
For users that don’t want to set a Blog Title, we are now using the domain as the link text. This should help some users.
-
Most people do not put their blog names into the header image. Some though do. I have friends who have done this. WordPress does need to address this.
The one thing to remember though is that Google cannot see the blog name inside the image. That means all it ends up with is the blog URL which is not going to give you a page rank as high as when you have an actual blog name set under settings > general.
-
@panaghiotisadamAh, I was typing when you posted that! I see that the link appears in the Dashboard now. The dashboard problem is solved. So the only bug that remains, is that our blog name doesn’t appear across WordPress because it’s part of the art of our banner. I can send a separate email later to Support about that. It’s been that way from the beginning of our blogging.
@vivianpaige, the name Above the header interferes from an art/design point of view on our template. You don’t really want to have your blog name listed twice in the header. And our name is part of the design.
Thanks to all who worked on this. Appreciated.

@thesacredpath,
Weren’t not changing anything on the actual blog display side. If a user does’t set a blog title one will not be shown on the actual blog.We are only using the URL for the Visit Site link inside the Admin screens, next to the WordPress logo. And we are only doing this when Blog Title is empty.
-
If you have the CSS upgrade, and I don’t know if you do, you can turn the blog title text the same color as the background and then it will still be there, just not visible.
-
@thesacredpath, you hit the nail on the head. I do think it needs to be addressed in terms of hits and name recognition of blogs with custom art banners. There needs to be another place that actually fills in your blog name for recognition across WordPress besides the name of a blog in the banner area. Thanks!
-
@quoinmonkey You can hide the the header text from Appearance->Custom Image Header if you don’t want the Blog Title to show up on the actual blog.
-
Hmmm, interesting about changing the color on a CSS upgrade. I don’t think we currently have it but it might be something to look into in the future.
-
OK, now the blog URL is showing on my test blog when the blog title under settings > general is blank, so that works. For a while there, if the title was blank, nothing was there in the dashboard to click on.
-
-
@mtdewvirus, yes, that’s what we’ve been doing, hiding the name. The only downside is that you then don’t see our blog name across WordPress under all the posts under tags and categories. So our blog name then doesn’t show up across WordPress or in Google in the same way as other blogs.
The other problem about the Dashboard click to view our front page, you have taken care of. Thanks!
