Very new–lots of questions about starting my website

  • Unknown's avatar

OK, so I’ve been reading up on the wordpress website (.org and .com) and I feel like I keep hitting a brick wall so I’m just gonna ask about the stuff I have questions on and go from there. First of all, I’m confused about this particular page:

    https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/

I mean I see that it’s $18 a year to not have “wordpress” in the url. But can I get things like personalized email? Like (email visible only to moderators and staff)? Do I have to have ads? I thought this payment would remove that.

Can I just make my website look like a normal website? (The bar across the top with links like “Home”, “About us”, “Faqs”, etc?)

And what else do I need? Host? Domain? If so, how much is that? I really don’t know what this stuff is and for these reasons I thought of creating a website with wix but I doubt there’s a lot of people who can help you with problems.

I really don’t know where to begin with all this so any help and support is appreciated. Thanks all

You did not specify a blog address or reason for posting when you created this topic.

This support forum is for blogs hosted at WordPress.com. If your question is about a self-hosted WordPress blog then you’ll find help at the WordPress.org forums.

If you don’t understand the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, you may find this information helpful.

If you forgot to include a link to your blog, you can reply and include it below. It’ll help people to answer your question.

If you start with WordPress.com, you don’t need a custom domain name at all. You can just start with a whatever.wordpress.com URL for free. In fact, don’t spend a cent until you know what you really need.

We can’t tell you if WP.com is best for you if you don’t tell us what you want the website to do. Tell us what you need from a website and we’ll tell you which kind of WP you need.

At Wp.com each upgrade applies only to what it says. If it doesn’t say No Ads, then you get to have ads on your blog whether you want them or not. The No Ads upgrade is $30 a year.

There are 200+ themes here at WP.com. Some have tabbed headers, some don’t. Hosting is free here. Your whatever.wordpress.com domain is also free.

Well I need a website for new theater company. What I need is what I said here:

I mean I see that it’s $18 a year to not have “wordpress” in the url. But can I get things like personalized email? Like suchandsuch at mycompany dot com? Do I have to have ads? I thought this payment would remove that.

Can I just make my website look like a normal website? (The bar across the top with links like “Home”, “About us”, “Faqs”, etc?)

And what else do I need? Host? Domain? If so, how much is that? I really don’t know what this stuff is and for these reasons I thought of creating a website with wix but I doubt there’s a lot of people who can help you with problems.

Forgive me but I’m not sure what you need me to elaborate on so I welcome questions. (I hope this reply doesn’t come off as snappish! It can be hard to communicate on message boards sometimes.) :D

I do want a costume domain name like mywebsite dot com and the email option. When you said $30 for no ads, that’s where I’m confused because I didn’t see an option to select no ads except where it said it was around $100 a year on the right side. I didn’t realize hosting was free either, is it still free if you have your own domain name?

fyi, for some reason in my original message I typed a fake email just to give an example but it came out saying “email redacted”. Hope that didn’t create confusion.

    So… can anyone help?

    No Ads is $ 30.– / year

The $ 99.– / year – is a bundle that includes No Ads and many other things – if you need all of them it saves you money

for a custom domain email address there are several options – some are free and others cost a bit –

Yes hosting is free here – the upgrades are to add different functions to your blog

@RC is correct – most people start simple to see if they like doing a blog / web site – web sites can be a fair amount of work – I spent over 6 hours on the article I published last night

there are over 220 themes here – most are free – put a bit of content in a blog then look at the different themes at

    Dashboard >> Appearance >> Themes

many can be changed to have one wide page with no sidebar so it looks like a “regular” web site

    Thank you. :)

I guess one thing I was confused about was I didn’t see an option to select “no ads” but maybe that come later when you’re starting the account? At this point my best bet is to start building the site and then go to these message boards when I have questions.

You need a live blog to buy an upgrade – not sure how the Store options are for an account with no blog

Yes – pick a good blog name and make a few posts

    Thank you.

I have a question about buying your own domain name. This is what it says in that page:

“Keep your personal details out of public records about the domain for $8 a year.”

My question is what kind of “personal details” are put into public records when you don’t pay that $8 a year? I’ve never heard of this happening so that’s why I ask.

Also, regarding ads, what kind of ads are shown if you don’t get the upgrade to remove ads? Is it just wordpress ads or is it any kind?

  • Unknown's avatar

Internet rules require a way to contact the owner of a domain name –

Name, address, phone, email I think – the $ 8.–/ year puts another company between you and the public

    Ads

they are supposed to be “family friendly” – so I guess like TV – in the past some “dating” services if you wanted to meet very young Asians if you wanted to visit SE Asia snuck in but were removed –

OK, forgive me but I keep hitting a brick wall. For example I want to start a website instead of a blog so I go to this page:

    http://learn.wordpress.com/bonus-round-get-a-home-page/

But there’s no option to click on a link to do any of those things. But I’m fine creating the website with a theme by the way

Also, when I go to this page:

    https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/

There’s no way to pick and choose what I want. I want to get the $30 a year option where I have my own domain, email address, and whatever but there’s no ads. I also want to pick the option for $8 to keep my personal details out of the public domain. This is why I’m so confused. I mean, once you get past the sign up screen is there an option to choose any of this stuff?

    I’m dyin’ here

  • Unknown's avatar

You need to register a free regular WordPress.COM blog to see the options

Your-blog.wordpress.com – until you have a base blog none of the options will show up

Pick a decent name to register your base blog

  • Unknown's avatar

There is no such $30 option.

The no ads upgrade is $30 a year. A custom domain and mapping are $18 a year. Privacy on that is an additional $8.

You cannot purchase any upgrades until you have a blog. Upgrades apply to a particular blog for one year.

  • Unknown's avatar

You need to have a blog / site before you can buy upgrades for it.

    A blog is a website.
(A blog has a special “page” with updates whenever you make a post.)

You can use WordPress.com to make a so-called “normal” page based site without posts. If you don’t want a blog, then don’t write posts.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

The theme is how your site is displayed. Menu on top? A sidebar with additional information? What colors and fonts are used? How wide is the content area? Is it flexible, responsive, or fixed width?

Sign up for a free WordPress site / blog. Write some stuff. Then choose a theme you like. Finally decide what upgrades you want to buy.

This is why I’m so confused. I mean, once you get past the sign up screen is there an option to choose any of this stuff?

You can change almost everything if you want to!

Seriously, if you had simply started a blog on October 20th you’d be so far beyond this point that we can’t even begin to describe it. Start a blog, and blog. After a few weeks, think about if you need any upgrades at all. If you do, purchase them then.

Seriously, don’t be an ass. Ya see, all these other people, really cool. I had valid questions and they answered them and recognized I’m new to this and it can be stressful. Oh, and I wasn’t ready to start then. And I work about 18 hour days and believe me squeezing in time for something that’s already a headache since it’s not user friendly is like climbing a mountain. I’m good at software. I scored a 97 percent on Outlook and I had barely used it. Therefore it’s safe to say that a lot of this stuff isn’t user friendly. I work in an office with people who’ve been working with computers for years and they have trouble with WordPress. But in any case, people have different learning styles and different learning speeds. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. So if you can’t be tactful like all the other people who’ve responded to this message then please shut up and do something useful.

And by the way, everyone else–you rock! Thank you very much.
