VERY slow connections to 0.gravatar.com, 1.gravatar.com, et al.

  I’m using Firefox running on OS X Yosemite.

  When I try to add a new post, there are LENGTHY waits to connect to 0.gravatar.com, 1.gravatar.com, and some other places.

  I do not have the gravatar option checked in Settings > Discussion.

  How can I get WordPress to stop trying to connect to gravatar.com? or is something else going on?

  I do have the add-on SSL Version Control 0.2 installed in the Firefox browser.

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  When I posted the above, I then spent 1 minute 15 seconds (by my watch) “waiting for 1.gravatar.com”.

  This does not happen on Chrome, only Firefox, but Firefox is the browser I use since it can paste formatted text (links, italics, blockquotes, boldface, etc.) and Chrome (and Safari) are unable to do that.

  And on posting that, I waited 1 minute 5 seconds to connect to 2.gravatar.com, and then another 25 seconds to connect to 1.gravatar.com.

  What IS all this gravatar activity? How can I stop it?
