Very slow loading a video file into page
-
Looking through prior posts here I see that .mp4s in the H264 and AAC codecs are preferred.
That’s what I’ve uploaded to my media folder. But — and this is using the WordPress app, not the browser version — when I try to place a file in my page text, it is taking a very long time (black rectangle with “Loading…” in the middle). The file is only 60 megs, but would it help if I uploaded a smaller file?

Hi there,
Our size limit for video is 1GB, so you are well under that. Out of curiosity, if you perform the same task within your browser instead of the app, is there any difference in the time it takes?
One thing to be aware of is that we need some time on our end to process the file when you first download it (to further optimize it and prep for web use) so we will not show the video if it is still processing. A 60 MB file is not too big in terms of video, but it is a lot of data to upload and process on your site. Even with optimized video services like YouTube it takes them some time to process a new video before it is ready to be posted.
Instead you may wish to load your video(s) directly to the media library on your site first, you can even batch load several videos this way. This will allow some time for them to be processed and ready. Then once it is uploaded to the media library you can insert it on your page and it should appear immediately since it has already been uploaded previously.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I did upload the video — encoded via Adobe Media Creator — to my media library first. (Just built a new computer, why not use it!)
I discovered that in the WP app the “Loading..” indicator never goes away, but if I switch to Preview the clip shows up, so that’s out of the way.
Very OT, but the difference between the browser-based editing setup and that of the app is confusing. I’m sure there’s a reason for the “block” innovation, but when you’re just trying to publish essays futzing with these developments is an encumbrance. Before you get shoved into the pool it’s helpful to have the reason for a swim explained.

Are you using the Android app or the iOS app and is the app updated to the latest version? Also, try logging out and logging back in and see if anything changes.
Let us know how that goes! If you still have the problem let us know what version of the app you’re using and we’ll take a closer look. Thanks!

I’m using a Windows app on my laptop. Please don’t tell me that I’m using a supposedly outdated app. It’s served me pretty well.

If you’re using an out of date app, then not all of WordPress.com’s features will work as expected which is why we would need you to upgrade your app to the latest version to continue troubleshooting this issue.
It looks like the latest version of the Windows app is 6.13.0 which is compatible with Windows 7 and up. If you open the app you may be prompted in-app to upgrade, or you can download the latest version here: Link
Let us know if you upgrade and it’s still not working for you. Thanks!

Downloading now, thanks.
If I might add on one more OT: where are my draft saves? I recall having access to them in the past, along with, I believe, site backups, but I can’t spot those options.
-
@willandermann Normally they’re under Posts > Drafts in the app. Let us know if you’re not seeing those!
-
I’ve downloaded the most recent version. The install pane says this will be a fresh install, update is not mentioned. Is that normal? Thanks for the handholding.
-
Hello,
If you’ve installed a fresh version – that does look normal.
Are you able to see your drafts?
-
Yes!
Now hopefully a final question. While I was earlier uncertain how to proceed I closed the Windows app and tried using the online version. I was able to find a draft that contained revisions I made yesterday. Just now when I opened the updated Windows app it opened directly to an old draft, not my most recent online save. Do I have to worry about overwriting the newest online version, or can I just search through revisions to pull up the online version. Does WordPress basically moot the overwrite worry by just saving revisions and letting you pick from them?

You shouldn’t, once it syncs it will pull up the latest, but just to be overly safe you might want to finish this latest post online.
