Very slow website that I need advise on

I know only little about websites and I really need some advice. I had a website built on WordPress 12 months ago by a friend (he change me a lot of money) and I have never experienced such a poor performing website (I’ve had 11 websites prior to this one). The thing is, I believe it to be not the platform, I think it’s the way it’s been built (or for a better word plugged in) because it uses many of the same images as the previous site (which was custom) but at it loads 1/8 the speed. It has a speed rating of 6/100.. Moreover, 12 months after it went live we only have 2 of our page headers visible on our Google search (we had all 5 on our last site after only 2 weeks). Could it be that instead of putting useful code to do small things the developer has put too many unnecessary plugins to do all the small things needed? We now have 80 plugins, it that normal because it seems way too many and no doubt it could be the reason for the slow speed.
