Very small font size again in the editor

  • Unknown's avatar

    Over the last couple of days the font size in the editor has become tiny (around 8pt size). After tweeting about this another two people that I know both said theirs had gone the same way. Myself and one other are using the Button 2 theme, I don’t know what theme the other person uses. It was suggested by WordPress on Twitter this might be a bug that you are aware of. It happened around 2 or 3 months ago and you fixed the bug then.

  • Hi there,

    I checked one of your recent posts in the editor, and it’s showing a 16px font size to me, same as on your site itself. I’m also not aware of any other reports about this. So this could be something browser-specific.

    Can you tell me what type of device (computer/mobile), and what browser, including the version number you’re using? You can find that information here:

    http://supportdetails.com/

    If you log into a different browser, does it happen there as well?

    Lastly, can you please take a screen shot of what you see in the editor? Please make sure the screen shot includes your browser’s address bar as well. Upload that to the media library at My Site ->Media, and we’ll be able to see it there.

    Do you mean my media section on my blog? Where I store all my photo’s? That is where I’ve put them anyway.

    I have taken two screenshots and put them in my media folder. One is a review of a book (it’s a draft post, so if you go into it, please don’t disturb it, took me all night to do that post 😃). It was done using Firefox browser but I’ve taken the screenshot on my laptop which runs Chrome browser. (It’s the same in both browsers) Firefox 78.15 (64 bit) which Firefox says is up to date.

    The other screenshot is a sample post that I’ve just written using Chrome Browser on a Chromebook laptop. My Chrome browser version is: 94.0.4606.97 I assume also up to date. Thanks.

    Exactly, yes. I can see them there, thank you :)

    It looks like this might be an issue affecting older themes. Specifically, the block editor should be using the font and font-size specified by your theme, but for some older themes it’s using the browser default instead.

    Our developers are aware of this, and working their way through affected themes, but I can’t tell you when they’ll get to Button 2.

    But you can “fix” this for yourself locally in your browser. To do this, you’ll need to install a browser add-on called Stylus. It’s available for both Firefox and Chrome.

    After installing the add-on, click on the icon it will add to your browser toolbar, and select Manage. On the next screen, click the Write new style button, making sure the as Usercss box is checked.

    On the next page, paste the following code in place of the Insert code here text:

        html :where(.editor-styles-wrapper) p {
            font-family:Lato,Helvetica,sans-serif;
            font-size: 16px;
        }

    And in the Applies to URLs box above, type wordpress.com.

    Here’s a short screencast showing the steps:

    Ah, thank you so much. I have done it, and it worked – yay. Well I’ve done it on my Chrome Browser anyway but I’m sure it will work on Firefox too. I shall try that soon.

  • Thanks for letting me know :)

    By the way, it appears this is actually coming for the block editor itself, rather than the theme. The folks on WordPress.org are working on a fix, and as soon as that’s done, we’ll also be able to implement in on WordPress.com. We’ll keep you updated.

    Ok, thank you. In the meantime I’ve added Stylus to Firefox too and it works fine with that as well.
