Video backgrounds?

  For years, I have run a blog which I love very much. I want to step it up to more of a personal/professional website, but I’d really like to elevate it with a video background on the top layer.

  Unlike Squarespace, WordPress.com templates don’t seem to have any templates allowing video backgrounds. Is this true? If so, does anyone have any code/plugins that can help me?

  Ideally, I really don’t want to start from scratch with separate hosting, thereby losing all my blog posts. This appears to be my only option?

  Hi there
  As of right now, it is not possible to use a video as your background image. If a video background image is a must have, you can, as you mentioned, move to a self-hosted installation with all the whistles and bells that can come with it. You will not lose your content though!

  You can export all your content from your blog here, and import them into your new one! More info about moving your blog can be found here:

  Since you mentioned plugins, plugins are not allowed in content hosted here at WordPress.com due to various security issues. You can read more about plugins here.

  Hi Dave,

  Many thanks for the links and for the advice – if I can’t find anything suitable, I’ll certainly make use of this guidance.

  Since I posted the above though, I randomly found a template which is quite new and seems to have a squarespace-style background video header: https://wordpress.com/theme/twentyseventeen/jamesl182d.wordpress.com

  I haven’t tested it yet and It will be v limited, I haven’t read much about CSS customisation etc yet, but it’s something…

  Absolutely give it a try! You had specifically said background and not header video so that is what i based my answer on. Things look kind of quiet here today so i may give that a shot myself on one of my test mule sites.
