Video embedding

Hi! Does anyone know why an increasing number of YouTube videos refuse to embed, at least on my site? I mean using the short “share” link, not the long “embed” link.

It used to be just a few, now it’s more (but definitely not all).

“Share” produces a more compact and attractive window than “embed”.

I don’t mean clips that actively tell you that embedding is restricted and produce a window saying “Please watch on YouTube”. I’m talking about getting no embedded image at all — i.e. just seeing the link as text.

    Example:

Is there any fix? Is it a WP issue, a theme issue or a YouTube issue? I know this has been raised in previous threads, but confusingly!

    V many thanks.

I just tested the example you gave and it worked fine in a new post. Please review this article about embedding YouTube videos to make sure you are following the recommended steps: https://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/

Thanks and sorry to be slow in responding. No — this still does not work for me. I frequently embed video and know the various ways of doing it, but this clip and several other related ones refuses to embed. I am using Chrome on a Mac. Strange. I would love a further answer if anyone has one!

I am talking here about the short embed link and the url link not working. The long “share” link does work, but it is not how I like to do it.

As I mentioned, I had no trouble embedding that same video. Do you have a live page or post that you can show me where it is not working?

Thanks — but which embedding option on YT were you using? Pasting in the exact same code I showed above? I don’t have a live link sadly, as this is in something which is still in draft. I have no trouble with YT most of the time, but there seems to be an increasing (small) number of exceptions and I don’t think I’m the only one to have said this.

I simply typed in the exact link you included in your first post. You can see my test of that link at https://ariwinokur.wordpress.com/2015/05/31/test-video-embed/

I even changed the theme on my test site to match yours. No problems. Are you also typing in the exact link you listed above?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I am! I mean, pasting it in. Totally strange. You’re even testing with the same theme (a rather obsolete one, but still …).

So thanks, and I wish I could understand what is going on here. All that particular batch of his (Macfarlane’s) clips have that issue ay my end, but I have already embedded something else by him with no issues at all.

Appreciate your help and still hoping you’ll have a flash of insight to explain this!

The one thing you may be doing is pasting these links so that they become a clickable link on the post. You can see that happening automatically to me just below the video in my test post. If that is what you are getting, try turning off the link by clicking the remove link button on the toolbar.

Hmm … well, it wasn’t showing as a link in the visual editor, so there was no link to remove — but the link was active in the preview.

But yes … you are on to something. I resaved the link in the text editor instead of in the visual editor and it was fine. I also removed some code which had crept in on either side of the embed link (can’t remember what it was now).

I’ll probably get to understand what happened better next time, but meanwhile thanks!

It sounds like you got it working now. Congratulations! Please let me know if I can help you in any way.

I did, thanks to you. Still don’t totally get what’s going on here, because it doesn’t normally happen. But has consistently with this and one or two others.
