It says next to it ‘Add a Video, The Home Page template includes a section for a video, along with a bit of content.’ how do i get rid of this or replace the video with one of my own? (for free)

Note: Your detailed theme description page is at https://wordpress.com/themes/gateway/ and that’s where set up instructions for it are found. Scroll down to Homepage Template there. The live demo site is at https://gatewaydemo.wordpress.com/
re: embedding videos
We embed videos into pages and posts and no upgrade is required unless or until you exceed your free media space allocation. https://en.support.wordpress.com/space-upgrade/The video embeds in posts and pages that WordPress.com supports for all of our blogs – no upgrade required are found here.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/Video shortcodes are here http://en.support.wordpress.com/shortcodes/#video
Note to post your own videos requires a videopress upgrade unless they are on youtube or another source site that is supported and the videopress support doc location is https://en.support.wordpress.com/videopress/ As a workaround, keep in mind that you can also upload your media to another service like youtube videos and insert it into your posts from there.
Example:
For youtube embedding into wordpress.COM blogs see here https://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/For using the shortcode see here https://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/#embedding-with-a-shortcode
