Video sharing: select download, it opens in another browser window

How is someone meant to download one of my videos? I have enabled sharing on all my uploaded videos (I was told that this was the only way to make them available for HTML5, rather than Flash). But when I select download from the relevant button in the sharing menu, all that happens is the video plays in a new browser window. How is one meant to actually download it, like the button says?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi,

You can right–click the video playing in the new browser window, then click Save (Video) As*.

    * This depends if you’re clicking on the video or outside of the video on a blank area of the page.

    Hi Bryan

Even if that worked it wouldn’t be great: when visitors click ‘download’ I think they expect something to download.

But what you say doesn’t even work. (At least not on a Mac running Mac OS X Lion, and using Safari 6 — I haven’t tried it with any other browser). If I right-click on the video itself, there’s no option to download anything (see screen grab http://www.screencast.com/t/rdgKSwfB). If I right-click outside the video window there’s an option to download the page, but selecting that doesn’t download the video (http://www.screencast.com/t/Fyxqoyrc).

So, any chance of getting the download function to work? Please!

  • I can confirm what you’re saying (the share menu doesn’t appear when viewing a video) in Safari 6, which is because the share menu currently doesn’t appear with HTML5 videos.

If you try any browser with Flash installed, the share menu will appear and let you download the video.
